i am about to turn 18 soon and i will be receiving my dads 96 EL Fairmont. i am just wondering what the go is with insurance. the car is currently insured with GIO comprehensive. we have put EL GT replicas on the car and bought a pioneer head unit (havent changed the speakers). the car was lowered when my dad bought it about a year ago and GIO currently dont know about the lowering, mags or head unit.

once i turn 18 and earn some money i plan to get a 2.5" cat back exhaust as well as extractors eventually and possibly a cam mod.

i just want to know if any of you know what GIO would think about all this and what the go would be with insuring it all?

should i tell them now about the mags, head unit and how low it is or what?

thanks, any info would be much appreciated.

Well if you dont tell them, then your insurance is void.

I would tell them about the wheels and lowering and tell them that the car is only lowered 30mm (i think).

6 cylinder workshop ... interesting choice of place to post :P

I suggest you leave your mods until you get a tad older and your insurance becomes cheaper!!! Just enjoy driving around in a nice car.

Tell em about the mods that are on there - or dont bother insuring it and save on the premium.

Cd player they prolly dont care about. Rims and suspension they would be very interested to hear about.... this will make it fairly tough to insure at your age, may be best to keep it in the old man's name.

I'm with RACV and they don't care about the extractors or the exhaust, they don't know about the cam! I told them I had 7.5 inch rims and that was ok, they are 8.5inch, they also said only 30mm lower then factory its around that. I'm really not worried though I only got 3rd party and last time i hit someone I just payed up and all was good.

s**t i got manny conversion, superlows, lsd, cam and exhaust all done and havent told the insurance company,.,
wicked thing is my car is insured under my mums name, my excess is like 1200 though. lol

but i should try put it over the pits.. to loud too low, diff too tight, they may crack the s**t about the conversion. etc..

but you may as well tell em about the wheels and stereo. or just dont bother about it all, and put you down as a registered driver of the car still in your dads name ,.thats the best way.. cos then you dont have to take out a new policy where you should tell them about s**t.

regardless as to whos name the car is insured under rob, the insurance company still needs to be informed about the mods, or else when you (or your mum) goes for a claim, you won't get any $$$ from them!

I think you will find out if you dont tell your insurance company about the mods then you are in deep do do. Doesnt mean you have to get it covered but you should always tell them.

My insurance just went up $3 extra per month or $36 extra per year (whateva) as i told them about the sound system. And wanted to get it covered.

Peace of mind  (my XF got broken into alot and was not covered)!!! not making that mistake again.

And yeah until your 21 i would keep the insurance as a 70% you-30%your parents as the driver profile, as that wil cut down about half the cost if not even less :P

RACV would insure my ED for $870 odd dollars premium. with, 7 inch wide wheels,30mm lowered,CD player, clear indicators, and exaust tip. car insured for $4600 wheels not covered, and only 6 mods allowed.

i just got my new insurance with just car insurance, same mods plus car alarm , for $1350 premium, cars insured for $5 grand wheels are covered and i can do anything i want to the damn thing.

but thats all with rating 5 youd have to pay a bit more.

i have mine insured with just car insurance and I pay $1500 a year full comp, and they dont know about the cam. Reason I chose not to tell em bout the cam is that my mates car was written off and they dont pull the engine down, and the cam itself looks no different to a standard one, it has no markings what soever. Once I get the LSD and chip into it it will be close to $2000 a year. :(

I am now paying $700 all up for Comp insurance on my XR6 thru CGU have been with them since i was 16 so i have fairly cheaper insurance atm. As soon as i turn 22 i will have a full rating 1 as well which is pretty cool :P

I cant do mods on my car ne way as there are too many issues with the warrantee i have, so probally good in a way.

I would suggest to just keep it in your parents name if your gonna do the mods, will be s**t cheaper for you.

my normal insurance company (NRMA) wouldn't insure my EL Fairmont with all the mods .... so i insured it through SHANNONS :D :D :D

With SHANNONS it is insured as fully modified car and can do what ever i like to it with out effecting my insurance or increasing the price of premiums

17 x 8 mags .... super low ... 2.5" cat back exhaust as well as extractors ...
window tint ... good headunit and 2 amps and speakers and sub ... ect
