Hey all, i've the 6cylinder el engine, car misbehaves on lpg and petrol.

Was driving the other day when the car stopped dead, kicked over a few times and no go, looked through the engine and found nothing except that the distributor bolt was loose, car was towed to a mechanic.

I was away in nsw and they called me to tell me they needed to replace the harmonic balancer (there was a decent oil leak i had been ignoring), the replaced the distributor with a rebuilt one, new coil and new plugs. They tell me the spark plugs caused the problem because they were not lpg plugs.

I am certain i put lpg plugs in, but i may not have, but i had just gapped the plugs to 0.9 two weeks beforehand.

Does that sound plausible? -Also the car intermittently idles roughly, after 5 seconds it will shudder and stall for 3 or so, both these times vary. Car runs well at cruise speeds and car hesitates alot from stand still.

I am going to go spin the distributor to advance the timing and see if that changes anything, car feels like it wasnt set properly.

Mechanic tells me that he thinks the head needs reco'ing, he thinks it is an exhaust valve.

Any suggestions guys?

Advancing the dizzy picked it up a bit, halving the severity of the rough idle, but of course advancing the timing makes the car pull harder at idle, which is not going to be good on the brakes while driving in melb. I will twist the idle up a little and check the lpg mixer is fitted properly and report back.

Cheers

Do a compression test & a vac test on the engine, that will let you know if there is any issues with valves not closing/warn or warn rings. Stalling can be due to vac leaks too.
