After having the head gasket done, I'm getting clean oil leaking down around number 1 cyclinder on the exhaust side.
Doesn't seem to be coming from the head itself. And it was weeping there before the head gasket was done aswell. Do oil leaks happen around the tensioner cap and or screw. Could it be just an O-ring failure? |

Yes it can leak from there especially if there wasn't any gasket maker put on the tensioner plug thread. The tensioner retainer doesn't need the plug. If it does have gasket maker on it, you might want to check if the tensioner retainer is on properly. If all is good there, check your power steering fluid for any leaks. Hope that helps. phong =P~

Power steering fluid is all good, no more leaks. A bit of a whine coming from that area too. |

just to clarify what I said above... Quote: The tensioner retainer doesn't need the plug. That was meant to say....The tensioner retainer doesn't need the gasket maker...only the plug. Hadn't had my coffee yet  phong =P~

Please see attached pic. You must have number 5 which is a washer (normally aluminium) If it not there or broken it will leak as the oil is under pressure. Hope this helps..

i got a new rubber washer for the retainer from Fraud for $3.00 i think

The main oil pressure is around that tensioner so dad tellls me (he is a ford mechanic)
mine has the same trouble... although as always with any sort of fan... its really hard to tell where its coming from coz it always goes everywhere...

I have a funny feeling this ones my fault.
There was a slight weep from the area of number 1, and tensioner before the gasket change. But then got worse after the new gasket. I f**k up when I first filled the car back up, and put in nearly 8L instead of 5.5L. I then ran it that way for a week, and gave it some herbs for 10-minutes too. Could this have made the initial leak worse? |

The timing chain kit that i purchased came with an aluminium washer that i forgot to put on and yes it leaked a fair bit. After putting on the washer its had no leaks since which is over 2 years. |

Thread sealant/gasket maker is only put on the tensioner plug. Though I must admit, I didn't replace the aluminium washer...I just removed it and put a rubber O-ring on...which I think isn't a good idea since it wouldn't allow the tensioner to sit closer to the timing chain once tightened. However, after a year of driving it, it hasn't leaked. So I think it's okay and doing a bloody good job ...phong =P~

Just spoke to the mechanic working on this.
And they informed me the tensioner screw was all the way in, chain super tight, and no or very little oil was getting to the chain. They also said the saw a little bit of metal shavings. And the O-ring is stuff and was causing the leak. More to follow..... |
