Hey all, I have discovered this morning I am the proud owner of a stuffed starter motor. Are there any secrets or anything that would make it easy to change it (being stuffed under the manafold) in my ED.

Oh the car is on the driveway on a slope with not much room to move, and I am guessing fun times ahead.

Go from underneath! Tow it to somewhere flat, and put it on ramps or something.

Its really a one man job made easier with 2 ppl.

When i had to replace a starter motor on my old man f100 i got under neathe and took it out then got it conditioned . To put it back in we got a rope and hung it through the top , tied it to the starter motor so it would take the weight a bit and it was easy to line up from there.

it is easy with car ramps, only 2 bolts holding it in mate, u wont get it frm the top unless u take whole manifold off, which would be a prick too do, new ones should be bout $160

I got a new starter motor and fitted by auto elec for $210..

When me and j-flow fitted by el tickford motor we found it was easy to hold the starter motor in, get the lower bolt started.. and then get the top bolt started..

Then with some Team 1/2" Extension bar and 2x Universals j-flow held the extensions and universals in position from the bottom and i did the bolts up from the front of the intake..

GOOD TIMES!!!!!!!!

To get the car going firstly give the starter a couple of moderate taps with a hammer(this can place worn brushes to contact). If that doesnt work try changeing the starter relay for the headlight relay of the same colour. Those relays are behind the battery under a black cover. Starter relay is closest to the coolent bottle. If these bush mechanics tricks dont work then you will need the tow. And make sure you have checked your earth connections.

I'd actually be making sure the +ve wires going to the starter are clean.

Starter motors earth though the engine block anyway....

easy job, shouldnt take you long.

get front of car on car stands
slide underneath.
undo the two bolts
catch the starter motor
and replace with new one

p.s. i last did this with the car parked half up on a gutter its not that hard, fidly but not hard.
