Hi Guys,

I'm a first time poster in this forum. I'm 23, and don't know too much about engines. You will probably find this story hilarious, but I am pis*ed off.

I bought a run around spare car last yesterday, a 94 Ef Falcon, 6cyl 4 L.

I bought it for $2600, off a .......Irish bloke.

I took it for a test drive, all good, no rust, bought it.

Last night while driving at about 60clicks, I noticed a tinny rattle whenever I put my foot down to accelerate. I noticed it more and it got louder. Not when i take my foot off, but when I put it down.

After about 5mins, I slowed to a crawl to turn into my driveway, the car shook, then switched off. The accerrories were still on, so i just dry steered and pulled over.

This morning it kicked over, took for a small run, heard the rattle again, so went back home.

Any ideas what it could be guys?

I can't believe I bought a $2k Falcon off an Irish bloke- Straight from Snatch.

Thanks everybody!

Brent

Stuffed Cat? Thanks mate...Ill look into it a bit on the net, theres heaps of different ideas of what it could be but that makes sense....

Nah its no race thing- its just from Snatch, he buys a caravan from the Pikie and it doesnt have wheels and falls apart..My mates thought I fell for the oldest trick in the book buying a 2 grand car from an Irishman thats all haha.

On the otherhand, Im devestated, owned it one day now it will kick over but only run a couple of KM's before it rattles and shakes again....

Thanks guys

Where is the rattle coming from? when it rattles does the car lose power/acceleration? What does the rattle sound like? Is there smoke or anything coming out? Do you know if there has been modifications?

Also, internal jokes don't work on the general public. As much as Snatch is a good movie, not many would refer to it when you mentioned the Irish part. It just made the whole thing more confusing.

Also $2500 for an EF isn't too bad.

Hey guys cheers for the reply....Yeah sorry about the Snatch quote, obviously confusing...

Yeah Im really worried now. I took it for a spin this arvo. The slight rattle when accelerating was still there, it sounds like its coming from the dead centre of the engine. Not much help I know....

There isnt any smoke or anything like that Temp guage is fine, fuel is fine. However, I did notice when slowing down to below 40, it fells like it loses power. I slowed at a merge left sign, it sputtered and sounded like it was gunna die. I gave it some power, however when I went to park at home, whenever it slows to almost an idle, it just shuts down.

I tried to kick it over again, it sounds like its gunaa kick over, but doesnt if you know what I mean.

Its just frustrating. In a nutshell I can drive about 3km, and when it comes time to stop, when its slowing down to a crawl, loses power and cant idle either...

Very frustrating when I just bought it yesterday. Plus I know nothing about cars, so very confusing.

And nah mate, wasnt a manual GLi....

Thanks in advance everyone.

correct me if im wrong but it sounds like a timing chain or harmonic balancer issuse.

dosent sound like a blocked cat as ive had one of those and i could still drive fine just sounded like s**t and had no balls (also in a ef, turned out to be a dead coil pack issuse that caused that)

Could be pinging too. Sounds like a tinny rattle.
I was offered an ED for $150 last week and I knocked that back.

Hey guys, cheers for your input.

I took it for another spin and found some more stuff out. When its in idle, its drops like its about to shut off, then it revs back up, then falls, then revs up etc....

when it was more warm, sitting at the lights it was going to shut down, but I just jkept giving it accelorator, took it easy back home (feels like heaps off lost power) then when I slowed down to park, everything just shut down, but the accessories stayed on.....

But when its cold, I dont have this issue much at all, it can idle etc......After a couple of mins on the road though, thats when it starts happening...

I am totally stumped..And im worried if I take it to a shop, the mechanic will just say i need a "johnson rod" ...I have no idea at all....

Cheers everybody!

Your problem is a stuffed/gucked up idle speed control valve that sits ontop of the throttle body. If you do a search it will tell you to clean it out with a can of carbi clean for $10 and also spray out the throttle body. If that doesn't work just get one from the wreckers for $5/.

EF falcons are also known to blow the tranistor drivers (FETS) for idle control via the ECU. So if what I have mentioned doesn't work. Go to the wreckers pay at most $30-$50 and swap out the ECU-computer. Found behind the front left passenger kick panel...

Hey mate. Thanks for that, I took the throttle valve off and gave it a good clean...Took it for a run again, now there isnt any more rattling sounds, etc..It didnt switch off when I came to an idle either...However, the revs go down like its gunna stall, then revs up, down etc etc...

The sound from the exhaust sounds sick too, just a general sick chugging away sound, doesnt sound healthy...I might take it for a full premium service on pay day...Would they be able to find the fault you reckon? My biggest frustration is I just keep thinking the mechanic is gunna s**t me and Ill pay for s**t parts, etc that make no difference...

I swear the best mate to have would be a mechanic hey haha

Thanks for your help blokes
