I have en EF and replaced the lifters (actually they are called Hydraulic Lash Adjusters) late last year.

Not hard to do if you're prepared to get down & dirty.
You need to take the rocker arm assembly off, which is a bit of work, but at least you can then see the camshaft & what condition it is in.

They sit inside the rocker arm shafts and it's the lash adjuster itself which pushes down on the valve.

I bought my new HLA's from Repco, about $22 each, and you need 12.
They are non adjustable.

You must bleed them before installing so they are full of oil.
Fill an ice-cream container with engine oil, then with a strong paperclip unfurled, poke it in the end and push back the ball valve. Pump it up & down so it fills with oil. If you don't do this it might not pump up. (I had this problem).
