howzit
the oil pressure in my 89 EA Falcon S 3.9 CFI is low
when you start it up it sits between red(low) and 1 bar
then when you start driving around town it goes up to two bar but if you strat driving hard or cruise on the highway above 70kmh it starts going down
and sits between red(low) and 1 bar again.
if you start going over 110kmh it sits just in the red(low)
could somebody please tell me whats wrong
the head gasket is fine and there doesnt appear to be any oil leaking from any where else
all help greatly appreciated
cheers

How many k's has the engine done, it sounds like the main bearing have excessive play and aren't able to restrict the oil flow to create the oil pressure needed for sufficient lubrication.

that may be the case as well but i would think this would result in a drop in oil pressure when the motor is hot - he states he has no or little pressure at cold start up

thats your answer.

some engines will go way past that but for some reason some do not, mostly from not being serviced properly by previous owners.

try some penrite HPR15 15W60 , but it will not 'fix' the problem it mayl help to 'hide' the problem and prevent further wear be bringing the pressure up a bit

dude, you have to put on another guage in (mechanical) I know it's a bastard, but you have to eliminate that possibility.
happened to me (EF) but the guage was showing high (phew not the pump!)

nutrok does the engine actually sound like it has low oil pressure?
mine is very similar to yours - drive for 30 mins, oil pressure drops, tappets etc become noisy and makes scraping noises at idle. mechanic suggested that the latter was the hydrolic tensioner on the timing chain not getting enough pressure.
I second the choice in oil, mine knocks and carries on with 20w50 but thinner oils are much better (scary sounds go away)
also try winns "charge" - helps keep oil viscosity (and it did work)
i am just going to keep driving mine until such a time as i can afford a new motor or a new(er) car.
it's most likely a worn oil pump or worn bearings crank shaft bearings on mine and i have been quoted 700-1000 bucks to repair. And im not going to pay that type of money on a motor thats done 230000 clicks.

tho, your problem may be totally different.

if anything wouldnt you use a thicker oil, also if it was low the engine would clack heaps! my el had very high oil pressure and ended up being a faulty spade terminal on the oil sender.

mmm..my el has done 256,000kms n the pressure seems pretty high. It drops to about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way when crusing but when is start it in the morninhg it quickly builds up...im impressed with how these engins wear when taken good care of all their life. Mine has been serviced every 8 - 10,000kms since new and runs really well...but you dont get a lot of engins out there that still peform this well at this age despite service history.

whereas mine didn't appear to get regular services before i got it. and the oil was at least two years old when i got the car, and now im paying for it with a worn out engine at 230,000.
at least it was cheap when i got it...
