Well I think I have f**k my power steering in a huge way.
I drove it from Melbourne to Bendigo on Saturday night to give it a operation.

When I went to drive......( I also managed to drive over the girlfriends foot ).......the car up on the ramps I had smoke billowing out of the engine, no pwer steering fluid left ( after I filled it up in Melbourne ) and no power steering at all.

Will this much smoke I am thinking its a Rack I have done.

What is the cost of getting it done by a machanic and will I need to get the wheels aligned again.

Is it a big job to do yourself - the actual rack change because I can book it in for a wheel alignment tomorrow

Sounds more like the power steering switch has s**t itself. The switch is on the rack and when the go they spray lots of high pressure fluid all over the exhaust giving off lots of smoke.

Switch is only about $30, certainly worth a look.

how long were you driving without p/steer fluid?
if it had no fluid in it for a while, chances are the pump will be noisy now.

Glad to have helped, just hope running the steering dry hasn't done anymore damage.

The same thing happened to my EA driving from Monkey Mia to Geralton. Didn't notice the smoke until the car was stopped so don't know how long it was leaking for but the pump was empty. I never had any trouble with the PS afterwards, so you might be lucky.

I just went to Repco to get the part which costs $75 , this seems really high and once again confirms why I should never go to REPCO again, its only that I needed the part so bad.

Damn you REPCO!!!!!!

OK problem now fixed and the steering feels lighter then ever, even before the problem started. Now I am just waiting for the degreaser smell to go away, I thought why I am down there I might as well degrease the engine as well.
