On my EF XR6 there is a little horizontal 'splitter' or spoiler bit in the front opening that is part of the front bumper and sits between that and the bonnet, held on by 3 plastic screws. While I was polishing everything yesterday I removed it and it now makes a bigger gap for air to flow into the snorkel, providing the rubber seal is all good.
I havent felt any improvement but I'm sure it'll be giving the engine a bit more air.
It doesnt make the front look funny at all, in fact I think it improves the look.

Its not part of the intake its between the top of the front bumper and the bonnet in the middle and about 50cms long, held in by 3 plastic screws.
Part of the XR front. I dont know what to call it.
If you have an EF XR 6 or 8 you'll know what it is.

lol i've had a look thru the entire gallery - that part seems to be fitted to the genuine XR's, not the Gli's to XR's... or maybe its just me...

the part is commonly known as a grille  .
although on the EF XR6 it was just 1 horizontal bar that just acted as a filler between the bonnet and the bar.
all ef xr6's had them although most have been removed

Doesnt look strange at all. Looks better. You'll get the same amount of bugs with or without it. With it on the bugs are harder to get off.

Take it off, stand back and have a look at your car if your not happy refit it. I think it looks better and I reckon a little bit more air will get it too, not that I've noticed any more power.
