Hi Guys, this is my first post,

i have a 1996 EF falcon wagon and here is my problem:

first the power steering pressure switch on the rack sh*t itself and was leaking steering fluid on the cat converter (not good!)

replaced $95 later.

then, i was parking my car one day and lost all power steering and it started squealing (i thought the belt was just slipping)....

i went shopping and came back to the car started it and when i left the carpark the squealing stopped and battery light came on (belt came off)

not thinking i kept driving (forgot that the waterpump runs off the same belt), drove for a while then the car beeped and let me know it had overheated. oops!!!

upon inspection it appears that the power steering pump shaft had seized and the pulley had continued to spin (squealing) until it had thrown the belt.

3 hours later and a second hand power steering pump (verified to be in working order with no leaks) i was back on the road again.

2 days later after normal driving and being left overnight, i start the car in the morning to head off to work only to find that the pump was dry and it had dropped its contents all over my garage floor (great!).

upon inspection this afternoon, it appears to be leaking from the shaft.

i have an understanding of hydraulics and i believe that there is a problem with either the relief valve in the pump or on a valve in the rack.

my question is does anyone else have any experience with this sort of thing?

is there something i'm overlooking or any other checks i can do? it is leaking when there is no pressure, so i assume my rack has killed a perfectly good pump

i put some wynns auto trans conditioner (that stuff that supposedly stops leaks, i guess it makes the o-ring behind the shaft swell??) into the pump, and it has since stopped leaking, i guess i have to pull it apart and replace that o ring, can anyone give me a quick rundown on how pull it apart???

any answers to my previous post??

i do believe there is a bigger problem in my power steering system.

I bought a complete set of seals off eBay for $8 plus $4 postage. The originals O rings were so deteriorated that they broke up when I flexed them. There are instructions included with the seal kit. That said I did not replace the shaft seal as it is still good. A friend suggested not to use dextron in the power steering.

Cheers,
C

Gday Mate well here is somthing ive learnt Never over fill your system because what that does is presurise the excess liquid throught the system and causing the Switch to s**t itself. take it from me. ;) Happy New year Mate.

[quote="caseyaberhart"]anyone know where i can get a cheap power steering pump, maybe with a metal pulley? try ebay, wreckers or post up here in wanted. i have had a few deals with some of the ebay power sellers and saved their email contact, ask direct.see who is wrecking in forsale. i think you have a rack problem, pump hi-low press lines may be hi---blown seals rack and rack end seals----boots full? equal pressure on pump will blow pump x 2,-3.get it looked at and fix it.i drove 100ks with no power steer to get a new rack fitted on xmas eve, finished 4.30pm and the v8 was a bit--.
