Ok, I ripped out the engine from my parts mobil, its a 3.9 Litre MPFI, but that really doesn't matter. I took out the block, with everything thats not head related still attached (ie heads been taken off already), and stripped it all down, and got the crank out, after taking all the pistons off, blah blah blah.... anyway, my main questions are....
1)what is next?
My guess would be the cleaning? how is this done... I have taken EVERYTHING off the engine. do I just hose it down with degreaser, and keep cleaning until it smells clean?

2)What happens after that? I wanna get a rebore, where is that done? and how much do they charge? also I was hoping to get it blueprinted. But not if its gonna cost heaps.

3)The crankshaft on the other hand I definately want balanced... where's that done? how much?

4)When putting it back together, new forged pistons are obvious, but where the hell do I get the shims and the gasket and s**t from? Is there a kit I can buy? where can I buy it from? how much?

5) I will need a new sump, I know the answer is the wreckers, but its almost impossible to get to the sump without taking the engine/grinding the k frame out from the car. Is there a place apart from ford  that will sell sumps?

And some things to clear up, I chose this engine cos I had no choice, and it was technically free(ish). It is also meant to be a learning curve as Ive never done this before, its exciting so far... (and painful).

I know it seems like one of those where do I go, how much does it cost threads... and it is, I just seriously don't know... and before someone says Yellow Pages, I know most of the places are REALLY dodgy lol.

Sorry for the long post.

Cheers

good to see that you have taken the first step. Bout the best thing that you could spend your money on right now is learning by others experiences and through books on what is required to blueprint an engine. It will then save you a lot of money chasing different ideas that you might come across from different people. Follow whats consistant, ie forged pistons are better than stock for a high performance street motor, although not my weapon of choice.

There's not much information on rebuilding i6's though... I found one article, and that was the holden/nissan i6.
I'll go to a book store and see what they have on rebuilding engines... might be worthwhile.

So what do you clean the bastard with?

Cheers

Well, it just so happens I have a complete colour scan of an extensive article to rebuild the I6 with head porting. PM me your email address and I'll send it to you.

the latest Performance buildups. vol.15 No.1
with the super gas pontiac on the front has a very good step by step rebuild that brendon Mock does.

it has some mild porting tips in there too.
also things like what bearing clearences he uses and a few othe tips that would be good for a first timmer to know
