ok well on friday night my engine just cut out as i was driving, got it towed to the mechanic and got told today that its something to do with my a/c compressor or the thing that turns it on and off. They said they replaced the fuse to check if it would run and that it did, but sparks were being spat out of the front.

They said it will cost around $1000 for them to fix it, so my question is, would i be better going to a wrecker and getting an a/c compressor myself and fitting it? I'm assuming this is what is needed to be replaced?

Any info regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

cheers nick

if you get one from the wreckers make sure its sealed air con compressors dont like anything like dirt grime water inside them etc

if u are good with ya mech skills give it ago make sure you put the aircon lines on right so they dont leak other people will give u tips on how they would go about this

put it all together DONT turn your air con on drive to an auto elec tell them you have replaced the air con compressor but have not used the air at all ask them to gas it up

but what they will be doing dumpin nitrogen in there to pressure test it for then they will vac out the system them bomb it with gas as far as the fuse goes i would wack a new fuse in after u have completed the things above

this is what i would be doing from my exp as a refrigeration mechinc (not no more)
some people may have diffrent ideas but anyway hope i could help
cheers
justin

Sounds like its maybe just the clutch> if so you can change that without an AC recharge. If the compressor has siezed and the sparks are from clutch slip then its a new compressor, TX valve, receiver dryer and flush so $1K is about right.

Sounds like it might be the clutch : if the a/c was seized it wouldnt cause the fuse to blow.

You can just disconnect the A/C - there is a single pin connector on the passenger strut tower which goes to the compressor. Disconnect it, and thats done, and sorted.
