Hiya, I've got a NL Fairlane, just had a new motor put into it,
But, the problem is, and was also with the old motor, that it is so slow of the mark its not funny, I could almost walk faster than it, when you give it a bootfull, it revs to about 2000rpm and stays there until the speed catches up, 3-4 seconds, .. any ideas? also, when you press the GO pedal, lightly, it seems to pull harder once the revs get going, but on start off, its got nothing. the motor was a hybrid (from a 98EL) and a AU (WRA2 i think is the part stamped on the head) head and standard cam, We have another EL in the family here, and when you put your foot down on that, it always spins the wheels any help or tips or things to try would be great thanks guys Sommer.

Concidering they're a long wheel base and build for crusing it sounds normal.
I would suggest diff gear upgrade (3.45:1) if it hasn't got them. I would also look into changing the ecu to a more aggressive auto shifting one. ie: A Police or XR The fairlane's have a smoother and slower shifting program. other than that, you may have a s**t motor! or power hungry tranny.

I've a EL XR6 ecu in it, (no more speed sensitive steering) and 3.23 gears, see if you press the gas a little, its starts really slow, and then it seems to rev harder and faster keeping you gas on the pedal the same . could the gas cable be damaged or the ing timing out? Timing could be out.
Cable could be stretch/fraid but i would not susspect that. Gas = LPG? this would answer a lot of things. (or was that the american term?) Catalytic convertor could be blocked. Plugs could be filthy. Leads could be worn/faulty. Tranny Fluid too high? Fuel pressure could be low (blocked filter) Air filter etc. give it a good birthday and check everything!

I know this might sound stupid but your auto may be stuck in limp mode. Are you sure its still changing gears and not stuck in 3rd? Because my EB ran like you said for a day or so before I realised it was because it was taking off in 3rd because of limp home mode and with the shiftkit you have it could be the cause.

Same as mine sometimes. I suspect a power hungry tranny though. Even though I have to feed her a good length before she coughs up
If you slam down the acc pedal too fast doesn't the ECU limit the KW or torque it's feeding the Transmission? I notice if I just go gradually down with the pedal and keep it steadily going down as the trans is shifting up, the take off can be both powerful and smooth. If I go down fast then hesitate and bring it up, then go down hard again theres a huge lag all of a sudden with lack of power which takes a good 7 or so seconds for the power to come back on. Like it's flooded if you know what I mean. Is that normal? |

Also try checking your accelerator cable, my mates parents had the same problem with their NA, it just had no go and it turned out the cable was really stretched

Hey guys .
ended up replacing the fuel fiter today, and got the ING timing checked out - was fine, auto not in limp home mode, goes though all the gears fine, the accel cable looks a bit worn well, whats left of it anyway, got a friend (nice guy who helps me work on cars) who said he has a spare one I can try . Will see how that goes Also, How can i check to see if the auto transmission is overfilled??? Thanks guys. Sommer.

put your old original ecu back in and try that...
did your change the fuel pressure reg when u put in the xr ecu?

To check the accel cable is stretched; Just hold the accel pedal down with a brick ect and then go around to the engine, remove the first intake bend and check to see if the butterfly is fully open or just get someone to push the pedal down while you are looking at the throttle body.

Is that normal? was just reading this post...and i too am very curious as to what happens with the accel!!?? it seems to be that if you slam your foot on the accel, either at take off or getting on the brake it has a huge power loss...when taking off it takes ages to get up and go...sorta like power band haha. whats the deal guys?? any ideas

you say a new motor, check that the bbm is functioning properly, as if its stuck in high rpm mode you will have sfa low down power.
(this happened to my car when the head gaskit was done) |

Check the map sensor and vacuum tubing as can give similar problem.
