Car starts and makes whining noise form engine - p/s oil is full, no oil leakes, feels like there is no power steering at all, checked all the blets all are in place. Any ideas, asap. Please........ is a 96 EF 4.0 auto, just had the gearbox replaced as well.

if this is a ef theres only 1 belt.

sounds like the pump has died.

mine did it and drove the car for ova 9months without it.

just get another from a wreaker and change it its pretty simple.

cost about 50-100 depending where ya get it from.

Power sterring pump, ok, will give that a go, but there should be no issue with driving the car without it?

and if a new pump doesn't fix the problem, you might have to get a professional to check your steering hydrualic system.

Thanks, think it might need to go back to the mechanic to have a look at, is the whine a normal thing to happen at startup if its just the pump thats gone?

get some1 to start the car while your in the engine bay to pinpoint the exact location of the sound then inspect whatever it is, make sure there are no leaks in any of the hoses that may be causing loss of pressure.

If you need a new power steering pump just get a genuine AU-spec (and EF/EL compatible) one from Ford, price came down on them not long ago.
