Have you always used penzoil gas 15/40? maybe changing oil grade has brought on a lifter noise.

i just bought this car abt a month ago, and before that it was always serviced by a ford dealer, the bloke gave all the reciepts, i assumed ford would be using a 15/40 oil, should i try another oil.
used penzoil gas 15/40 as we use it in the au taxi which has 800,000 k's on it and still very quiet and smooth engine.

I would still point to a lifter noise, even though ford specs maybe 10w-40 as an engine gets older a thicker oil may be required to maintain pressure and lubrication through larger tolerances. If the engine was using a thicker oil say 20w-50 before, then changing to a thinner oil may bring on a lifter noise.

I use valvolene XLD 20w-50, have done for years in both EA and EL never had a problem with it.

just put in penrite gas 20/60 and a new filter, noise seems to be less but still there will it take time to settle, i don't think it would.

Hope its not your timing chain. Maybe the tensioners s**t itself, Giving you a chain type rattle. You will know when you get 6 dents in your bonnet, when your chain snaps and your cam siezes!

pre detonation is nothing.

pre ignition is sponatiuos combutsion befor the spark plug fires and has a ratly sound like a can of marbles being shaken.

detonation is sponatiuos combutsion after the spark plug fires and has a sharp metal on metal knocking sound
