well i bought a wade 1673 cam, j3 chip and shims from a member off this site all for my el xr6. i fitted the it all in yesterday and put the extra shims in to the rocker gear and put it all back together, and guess what it didnt fire.the starter motor span so freely that it was like it had no head on the block.i dont no were i went wrong
 shouldnt i of put the shims in?maybe the j3 isnt working but it just seemed like the motor lost compression.need help!!

Somone forgot to tighten the Cam Puller Bolt didnt they...

nar tightened it...even put lock tight.

Id be taking the rocker cover off and hitting the key and see if anything turns around, then going from there.

im just thinking maybe the shims are pushing the valves down too much causing no compression.because i opened the oil cap and you can see the rocker gear move while you crank it.

Arent there 2 different thickness shims available? I wish someone would design a conversion kit to f**k the lash adjusters off and just have those old style threaded doodangs with a locknut like an old 202...

Yeah you have to have the second shim to take up the gap left from the metal that is removed from the cam lobe when they re profile it. There are two different shims available though, Im just wondering if you have the thick ones where you may need the thin ones. Would there be issues with clearance with pistons if the valve was held partially open at the bottom of the cam lobe? Not sure. But this is the next modification on my radar so I shall follow with interest.

I know I have a wade regrind thought maybe it already had an extra shim in and then a third was added.

I think someone does make adjustable rocker arms...will cost you an arm and a leg for a whole set I think, but I remember hearing there are some floating around. Check your rocker assembly is on correctly...it may not have seated properly on it's guides when you tightened it down (very doubtful, but anything can happen). Did you set and reset the timing chain tensioner correctly?

did you try it without the j3? even if the shim's were wrong it should still start. what's the gear out of?

Did you bleed the lifters before you put them back in?
Putting an extra shim in and using a pumped up lifter will usually hold a valve open, as the lifter hasn't had a chance to reset itself to the new rocker position. This has been done before. Sometimes if you leave it overnight it will self bleed the lifters and start like normal the next day. If you did forget to bleed the lifters, be thankful you didnt crack rockers when you were bolting the rocker gear back down.

by bleeding the lifters you mean pushing a hole punch or small screwdriver lightly inside the HLA so it closes up?

Yes...
The process which the manual refers to as bleeding the oil from the lifters.  Just as easily achieved with a small nail or pin. I usually pull them all apart and make sure there is zero oil and put them in a kero bath or something to get rid of any varnish and check the springs aren't rooted. So I know when they go back in they are perfectly dry and compressed as far as they can go. |
