im having trouble getting my oil filter off. I have one of those oil filter wrenches but i cant get the thing to budge. Im only servicing it in the gutter so i cant get enough leverage or room to move with the thing. Does anyone have a good technique for removing a stuck oil filter?

get a old screw driver and a hammer
then smack that into and through the other side then you should be able to twist it off

ive had to do this a lot and i have a filter wrench too.

I will usually remove the air box and get at the filter that way. Gives you a lot more room.

I suggest using a 3-pronged oil filter removal tool that tighten its grip up as you turn it. With an extension bar and a ratchet, it's easy.

x2 on the hammer and screwdriver
make sure you grease the o-ring on the new filter

I had to laugh the other day, same deal mechanic couldnt get the filter off, he asked the car owner who put the filter on last time, the owner said he did it himself, but could only get it done up two turns after the seal touched the block, and couldnt get it the whole 3 turns  [he misinterpreted the whole 2/3 turns thing thats written on the motorcraft filter..]

+1...gives you heaps of room to move.

Also I usually can remove my filter by hand. From the top I grip the oil filter with my right hand and put most of my pushing/turning force on the bottom of my palm. Have to make sure the filter and hands are clean off oil of course...maximum grip required.

Ahhhh... I see... Makes so much more sense... That sure is the difference...My bad... :P haha...

I've always been a 'i'll go buy the righ tool for this job' type of person... :D

When i unscrew the filter it is full of oil... I thought puncturing it with a screw driver would've resulted in getting oil over you and the k frame... Unscrewing it with that tool keeps it fairly contained...

Cheers,
tim

you gotta do what you gotta do.
last time I serviced my au it was 3 days before payday and I had just spent the last of my dosh on the filters and oil for the car.
no wrench at all just got myself an old rag wrapped it around the filter as tight as I could and it had enough grip to turn it.(gotta get it VERY tight)

Not much work...it is more work to jack the car up and put it on stands in my opinion. Removing the air box takes 2 screws, 3 bolts and maybe another screw at the TB clamp. oil drips on K-frame and floor/cloth/cardboard rather than yourself

Screw driver through filter is really messy, but it gets the job done at a cheap rate :).

Remember Tim, a lot of us are backyard workers who are tight a***

ive seen the screw driver way go wrong, wasnt me but it was another bloke working on his eb,put the screw driver through it and he ended up destroying the filter making one end come off and and s**t everywhere, the other end still stuck hard against the motor, LOL is all i have to say, dont tighten it up to much and you can get it by hand with a bit of elbow grease as i do, tighten it too much and you will have big problems getting it off without the right tool
