I recently bought an EF Fairmont Ghia 4.0ltr. I don't think the car was well loked after by the previous owner, based upon what I've seen.

I gave the underside a good degrease and steam clean due to the build up of grease, etc on the sump, etc. I checked under there again today and I found some fresh gritty oil debris on a cross bar, sitting directly under the the main pulley at the front of the engine.

I imagine it is a seal of some sort, but would like some opinions on what people think it probably is and the possible costs of repairing such an issue. :(

Thanks.

Timing cover most likely the culprit. Bastard of a job if you ask me.

Have you checked the bolts on the timing cover? They may just need tightening perhaps.

Degrease the front of the engine or where the oil is now and after a day or 2 check for new signs of oil to determine exactly where its coming from.

could be the harmonic balancer seal in the timing cover that would run right on the cross member.

Had this done on my EB, after an oil leak was detected.
Cost $212 at the mechanics, inc. labour, replacement harmonic
balancer and seal, fresh coolant also.
(all drive belts and radiator pulled out then back in, to do the job)

Hi Commando - If i was some sort of shape-shifter I could possibly fit into the 10-15cm gap and determine the precise cause of the leak.

Just asking for some ideas, that's all.

Thanks everyone for your ideas.
