is this oil too thick or something? I only used it rather than buying something specific because it was sitting in the garage so I didn't have to pay for it lol

I would say a little thick for winter time approaching. A 10w/40 would be better suited regardless of km's IMHO.

A good quality semi or full synthetic oil would be great to start this new engines lease on life. I certainly recommend Nulon Hi Tech fast flowing 10w/30 or 10w/40 for your car. On a new motor, dont skimp out on providing adequate lubrication.

Yeah thanks shav for your advice, i used that oil you specified and the difference that it made was great, its hard to believe that just an oil change can make such a noticable affect under the right foot. I second your recommendation.

so a EB Tickford 6 should have 15w40 standard right? what about one with 200,000kms and slightly low pressure at warm idle.
it has 3 bar when cold
1.5bar at warm idle
but goes up to 2 bar when revved when warm

and it quiet as a mouse apart from slight lifter rattle on start up

you should still be able to run a 15w40 with an engine with those kind of km's. It will also depend on how often you change that oil. If you are changing it frequently (every 5000km) then an everyday quality brand will suffice. If you are changing the oil less frequent (every 10000km) then I would recommend a Synthetic oil to help protect your engine during longer periods.

If you are burning oil, i.e. smoke coming from exhaust at any temperature. Then look at a slightly thicker grade of oil to help reduce that. If your oil pressure is lower than normal, consider a 15w50.

Seeing as your engine is only rattly on start up, you could get away with a 10w40 or 50 during winter months to help reduce the rattle on cold starts. That way the oil gets to the galleries sooner.

HTH

10w40?! thats a bit thin lol. i'm not questioning you but i just don't understand this oil viscosity stuff. i change my oil every 5000kms and only use a motorcraft filter

thanks Troyman. that did explain alot. okay what do you guys think of Nulon 15w50? the 50 is thicker for warm running when i have issues with pressure drop at idle

Nulon is a great brand. There is nothing wrong with running 10w40 in your car. Its not that thin. Im running Nulon 10w40 Full Synth Hi Tech Fast Flowing oil in my car and its approaching 170,000km, with no noticeable leaks, or oil burning that I have noticed. As you may already know by now, in lamens terms, the 10 represents the oil viscosity when cold, and the 40 represents the oil viscosity at operating temp. The lower the number, the thinner the oil. Thats my take on it, and Im by far no expert on it.

You should be ok with that. But if it were me, I'd still go the 10w40 for winter and the 15w50 for summer months. Good luck with it all

I don't believe there is a need to change to a thicker oil for summer.
