hello all,

im having some dramas with the car.
all of a sudden out of no where lots of lifters have started to tick, so i began to investigate
pulled rocker cover off and it all looks really dry up there started it up and no oil anywhere so am i right to believe that this would be the oil pump, i'm thinking oil pump but the gauge is the car is reading fine.
could it potientially be blocked somewhere or is there any way to test the oil pump.

car is an ef 6 cyl.

thanks for the help,
Brad.

out of curiosity would a blocked pickup cause the gauge to read ok but prevent oil from reaching the head?

I've just fixed my EF engine with the same problem. I put an AU gasket on 1 year ago and had continuous HLA ticking. After installing and removing the rocker gear 10 times, I took it to a mechanic to test the HLAs, check the cam specs, etc. He put it down to an oil feed problem to the HLAs.

You can run the engine at idle and check the oil flow from the rockers. By placing a piece of cardboard over the timing chain, you can see how much oil is getting to the chain. Don't rev the engine or you'll have a mess and tie the leads ups so they don't foul the rockers.

When I put a new AU gasket on last Friday, I blew out the oil feed gallery & chain tensioner oil hole in the block with compressed air. As it happens, it was either blocked or gummed up. After running the engine for about 2 minutes, the HLAs stopped ticking. Problem fixed!

Apparently, EFs have a problem with oil pressure in the rockers. To increase the oil pressure there, you can install brass restrictors in No. 1, 3 & 5 oil return holes in the head (under the rocker pedestals) and use a Motorcraft oil filter. I'm also using a Cleveland V8 spring in oil pump to give a bit more pressure.

Do EB's have this dillema as well or is it just the later model engine?

The local cylinder head reconditioners told me it's just the EF. But as part of their reconditioning, they fit the brass restrictors to all their heads now.

An (old) Ford spare parts guy also raised the low oil pressure problem in EFs when were talking about oil filters. Must be something to do with the oil galleries and how they're cast.

With regard to blockages in the oil feed in the block, it could happen with any of the E-Series blocks.

the oil pressure gauge in the car is reading ok so would that suggest a blockage rather than a failed pump,

where about do you suggest i blow out with compressed air?

The oil gallery feeding the rockers shares the hole for the front head bolt (on the exhaust side). I wouldn't recommend removing just that head bolt to blow compressed air down it. You could try removing the rocker gear and blowing air down the oil feed hole, which is under the front rocker pedestal.
