Gday Fella's and Ladies.

New to the forum, currently have a EL Falcon, 98, Option 20 Police pack. 4.0L I6 etc etc.

Now i haven't done any major performance mods on the old girl as of yet, as money is the issue (Have another project car on the run too).

I'm currently becoming a mechanic, been at TAFE for the last 10 weeks, and my teacher told me of an old trick they used to do when he worked for Ford awhile ago for an increase in power. He's claiming if i retard the cam timing gear by 1 tooth, it creates better preformance...

Now has anyone heard of this before? he's a very knowledgeable bloke, and I wouldn't want to question him, but i can't see how retarding a stock I6 by one tooth can create a good performance boost.

Thats how the conversation started, asked him if he'd had much experience with putting cams in the I6, and he told me to go with that. I think i'll just save up my money for a Crow cam, instead of wasting my time on retarding it one... and hoping it works :lol:

I'll sus out all the options, I've had dealings with Crow before, and i like their products, although thats in a different sort of application to this (Holden Torana - Wer2 Hydraulic Crow Cam).

Eventually go down the turbo route one day when I'm off this Provisional License Restrictions.

Why go to all the trouble and not put a cam in, he is right in a way. You can get adjustable vernier cam gears, but they are for fine tuning performance cams. I cant really see any real performance upgrade by doing this to a standard cam.

the xe and xf 250's were 6 degrees retarded from factory.
when u put an aftermarket timing set like a rollmaster, set at 0 degrees they went a bit better.
i never heard this about the i6 though.

Thats probably what he is referring to then. But seriously, I would just save up some coin and get a cam for your EL mate. Wade cams are good :wink:

I Know 70's and early 80's ford's had there cam timings retarded by a few teeth too meet the new emission regulations coming out.

BTW if you advance the cam timing by a tooth on a RB30 motor (vl commodore/ r31 skyline) they go really hard down low..........if you spend most of your time in traffic/lights etc this a good mod..........

1 tooth on a cam sprocket is way too much timing to pull out of an I6.

On a standard cam 4 degrees would be max.

I wouldnt rely on the Rollmaster cam sprocket vernier gear 0 degree mark either.

You want to set a cam up correctly ?, use a dial indicator an read the lift.

Go tell your lecturer that.

I did it years ago, put an adjustable gear on a stock EFXR6 cam. spent some time to check and adjust it, found it was a few degree out from what the factory workshop manual said it should be.
the difference was noticeable.

then put a wade 1004 (way back when that was THE cam to have) in it, set that up with it and wasn't overly happy with it. the fitted an RPD R1 cam and set that up with it, was very happy with the R1 cam.
