My sons VL caught fire 8-) on Monday so I have purchased a 1991 EA CPI 5 speed :D and I am going to let him use it till he can get another car. Its a bit rough and I did drive it last night, the brakes are terrible but everything seems to work. Before I pick it up is there any problem areas (rust leaks ect) that I can check prior to paying.

Well, I would personally try and get a mpfi, however if your heart is on getting a cpi, have a look at the oil, coolant for possible contamination from each other, check to see if oil is leaking around the engine. How much are you paying for it? Also, does the suspension make any strange sounds? I hope he is supplying a RWC because EA's can have a pandora's box of defects waiting to be opened.

twason...check for everything LOL it's an EA :P

nah, check the wires at the Battery terminal, brakes, suspension ignition stuff. sensors such as MAP and O2 and check for Vacuum leaks...you will always find rust on an EA

phong =P~

I think some yank cars call it CFI. Same thing different acronym.

Yeah correct man. Yanks called it CFI (centre fire injection) we called it CPI (centre point Injection)
Biggest thing with EA's (if it's just a runabout) is the head. Brakes were always terrible on the early e series (I have an eb1 with abs and the brakes are shocking compared with my xh). As above check oil for contimination from coolant. Otherwise you get what you pay for as far as mechanical reliability goes. 8-)

its a gli with 280000k's,
Bad bits:
one slight bit of surface rust, battery area in a bad way. brakes don't work to well, 330CCA battery (but reasonably new) looks like its been broken into as the lock covers are missing, roof sagging. Missing HighBeam bulbs. Tyres stuffed but has two LTD rims on the front.

Good bits:
Costs $400, looks like a new radiator, reco motor and box apparently, underneath looks like its just had suspension done up. starts and runs OK. No diff noise or leaks.

worse comes to worse, you have a manual for early e series. someone would take that for 400!

actually, when we refer to it as CFI, we actually mean central 'fuel' injection. Don't know where firing came from. And no, it isn't a carby with fuel injection, as that would just be stupid!! It just uses a round air filter which makes it look like a carby.

hehe man, no need to apologise, when I was young, a mechanic once told me it was a carby and I believed him until I learnt what fuel injection meant. :)
