Hey guys!

I got a 1997 Ford XH XR6 manual ute and I'm after.some mods to do to it? Performance wise!!

I'm an apprentice mechanic I've booked it in at work for some pace maker 4480s and custom exhaust with 100cell hi-flow cat!!

But apart from that what's next that I can.do for more performance?

Cheers!

Ride: 1997 EL XR6

Power: 180 rwkw

Cam
Port and polish the head
Better flowing intake
Dyno tune with J3 or aftermarket ECU

That's a good place to start

First, grab a good AU engine.
Build that up with a cam, etc, and fit that to the ute. It won't need much. You will be pleasantly surprised... 8-)

ok, getting the head ported and polished as well as the exhaust wont do anything really untill you have a cam and intake on. they will make the cam more effective.

while getting the head done make sure you use an AU metal headgasket that will up the comp a little and give you a little more.

what budget do you have?

What intake do you recommend?

And I'm looking at spending around the 2k mark! Not including my exhaust !

That's not much of a budget, my head was that alone...

I'd go with Wade cam , J3 tune, Springs and retainers and intake.

the only way that you can keep it in that budget is to do all the work yourself and RESEARCH whats going to work.
what sorta power do you want?
where do you want that power?
is the car auto or manual?
if you go a big cam will you need a hi-stall (if auto).

if it was me, doing it as cheap as i could.

if auto
4.11diff
Regrind cam (mild)
exhaust
intake

Manual
3.45diff
regind cam (big)
exhaust
intake

a few other things can help too, is the car on gas? what diff gears are in it now? lots of things

Its a manual XR6 with 3.45 LSD, not on gas!

So my plans are :

Cam
Intake
Exhaust
Extractors
Springs

For now anyway

If you cant afford to get head work done, it wouldn't be worth getting a big cam. A standard flowing head cant deliver what a large cam wants and that results in no low down power ( due to cam ) and no high end power ( due to standard flowing engine ).

Personally for 2k Id do the diff, j3, big mouth, exhaust ( extractors, high flow and cat back) and spend the rest on either springs and/or brakes. Like 6 has kind of said, stock tickford cam produces more than enough for a stock head, its just Ford havent tunes it right. Even going a vernier gear too would be an idea. With the manual you'll be surprised at the change even with just those engine mods

What Im thinking is if you at least go a vernier gear, j3 + exhaust/induction you'll have the foundations for future mods and it will leave money for springs and/or brakes. Once you have some more cash and get the head done and cam you'll have the vernier gear to dial into the cam and also the j3 to tune it all already. If there is cash left for diff ratio then with the above mods you should have enough of a power increase to keep you amused until your cashed up already.
