Ok, during the manual conversion & head gasket job we snapped one of the side plastic guides. We removed the timing cover to replace it and couldnt find the smaller lower one, assuming its fell in the sump.

Is the lower one really needed? Car seems to be running fine without it.

You should have gone digging through the sump, it would have been there.
Yes it will be running fine, and yes it's needed, it will start to chew through the castings on the cover that the guide sits on.
If you're pulling the cover back off, i'd be buying a timing kit for it, definately worth it on the 6.

So its prob not a good idea then to leave it?

Heres a pic of the one thats fallen in the sump. The long guides to the side have been fitted, just this small one at the bottom we couldnt be f**k finding. We had already dropped the sump a bit, and was not enough room. And we didnt feel like dropping the k-frame to get better access.

Gee, why didnt Ford make it easier to service these fukin things? :?

When i stripped my old 4.0 down, that guide was chewed up and in the sump, my cover had also been chewed into from the chain... I'd definately be removing it and fitting a new kit.

'new kit'.....

Are we talking just the guides, or is that the chain as well?

Also, to replace the guides, does the chain have to come off?

hey can you get to the bottom guide with the sump off? or do you differently have to take the timing cover off?

Timing cover must come off, sump must be lowered a little cause it pushes tight underneath the timing cover.
