Hey everyone, due to a car accident on the weekend, the guy who's been helping me with my engine conversion can't help me anymore.... I need a hand big time. I've got a few questions to ask....

If we left the torque converter on the back of the engine and bolted the trans up to the engine, which we did... Would it cause the trans to be locked up? I can't see why it would, but it did.

Secondly, what could be the problem if when you turn the ignition, the starter motor doesn't get power but if you directly bridge the terminals that the relay goes into, the starter motor cranks (doesn't turn the engine over because the trans is locked up for some reason)

I have other problems, like the fuel pump is connected but not getting power but I can't work it out.

I am stuck, I've payed my friend and I have no money left and I have no daily driver. I live 50 K's from school and my round trip is around 110 KM per day.... I'm forever borrowing my mums fagna and I can't do it all the time because she's sick and needs her car for specialist appointments.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated....

havent done a 6cyl auto yet. but when u put the convertor into the trans on a cleveland v8 or earlier falcon 6 u need to turn the convertor around 360 degrees a few times so the convertor will engage the trans properly. the convertor needs to engage the trans oil pump and there a couple of tabs that need to be in the correct postion.
if u dont do this on the earlier cars the trans will lock up and can do damage to the convertor

usually u turn ther convertor around and push it towards the trans at the same time and once it finds the right position it will drop in 2 inches towards the trans.

you should always take the converter off and fit it to the gearbox first to avoid any mistakes and lock up and then bolt it to the engine where abouts are you, your fuel pump and slow starter turning over coule be as simple as bad earths check all earth straps are reconneted to the motor as well i left one off once very embarrising i had to call a mechenci in to point that simple over sight on my behalf

Cheers Alan

Well... The converter has 2 tabs on it that must engage correctly into the pump in the trans.

If you left the converter on the engine and tried to line the tabs upto the pump, you must be very f**k good, because it is hard enough to line them up first go outside the car with the converter in your hands.

Chances are you have lined the thing up under the car and bolted the trans tight to the engine. If those tabs werent lined up perfectly, you would have driven the tabs into the pump and most likely smashed the pump good and proper. Would explain why the starter motor cant turn the engine.

If you're really lucky, the worst you have done is just bound the 2 together and pulling it out and installing properly will fix the problem.

If you put a socket onto the balancer bolt and try and turn the engine, can you?

If I put a socket on the balancer, the engine won't turn over, the bolt just undoes. I have the EA 4 speed and converter and also the EB converter and trans spare. Will the EA and EB converter bolt up to the AU engine if need be?

Torana, thanks mate, I really appreciate the offer but I'm north of the sunshine coast and don't have any cash as of yet to pay you. I might be getting the money back off my mate, he said he has no worries giving it back to me since I need it for my car, so if it comes to that I might give you a PM if that's OK.
