Good practise to make sure everything is good before just slapping in a new gasket. You will find out to what extent you may need to go when the head comes off. I was just having a stab. My head cost about that for a reco (acid bath, new valve seats, new exhaust springs and retainers)

Its not a matter of how recently it happened. All the internals may still be old and ratty. Its an old car and to endure its longevity its worthwhile taking care of it.

for best results use a genuine au mls head gasket, not any of the aftermarket composite types, and keep your cooling system clean, coolant flush every 2 years and use good quality concentrate coolant, not the cheap a** pre mixed stuff...

If you are doing it yourself, get a workshop manual. If you don't feel confident, pay a good mech to do it.

the headbolts work like a rubber band, when you tighten up they stretch like a rubber band, once they have been undone they are useless
