Righto, so my EF xr6s power steering pump works just fine, but its noisy as fk!!! It rattles whines its a** off and squeekes real loud too. I can get a new one with 12 months warranty for 85 bucks.

My service manual doesnt mention noise, just when it fails. And says it should be taken to a specialist. So is there a way to fix the noise? or should i just buy a new one.

Cheers!

I'm assuming the Pump is full of fluid?, what's the condition of the belt that drives the pump?

Well the belt is two years old. The pump started being noisy after it was unbolted and put aside while I took the head off. Lots of fluid leaked out and the pump was started before I topped it back up. I think it's a little over filled now actually. The noise was terrible before I topped it up, it got better afterwards but it's still pretty bad.

How long was it sitting around for while you were doing the head? Also does the noise only occur when you're stationary or slowly moving or all the time?

Noise could be due to air bubbles in your system. Turn engine on leaving the cap off the pump reservoir. Turn the wheel lock to lock three times each way. Would be best to do it in a parking lot if you can, that way you don't put too much strain on your steering system, but can be done stationary. I did it with the car on stands so there wasn't too much strain on the system, but still took a week or 2 until the noise was pretty much completely gone (except for stationary steering).

See how that goes.

Bleed as stated above otherwise see below.

There are a few different grades of fluid recomended for noisy pumps, flush system and refill with CASTROL SYNTRANS 75W/85 or CASTROL AGRI TRANS PLUS.

I'll second uniacidz's comment, worse come to the worse, go to somewhere like Burson's or Repco or whoever you prefer to use in Sydney, give them your old pump, and they will give you a reconditioned one in exchange by Powersteering Australia.

Good news! Today I got a day off so I decided to have another go at fixing this obnoxious noise. After using a screwdriver (why the hell i didnt do this in the first place I don't know) to pinpoint exactly where the noise was coming from. And it wasn't the pump at all. It was the idler pulley and the tensioner pulley. The bearings were made out of sand. So I was chasing my tail the whole time. Replaced them and its so quiet now. Thanks for your input though guys it is very much appreciated. I have a bit of knowledge but clearly alot to learn!!

Cheers.
