nah, you didnt mention that u had a holley.

im guessing it is running too rich then, how many turns out are the idle mixture screws?
what size primary jets do u have in it?

You need to fit an idle stepper solenoid off an XC/XD 6 cyl carby, make a bracket and use that to set the idle speed. Done this before.
What ignition system are you using, EST, or old type dizzy. If old type dizzy, regraph it, and fit an MSD system to it, makes a huge difference.

it sounds to me like too much timing/compression, Carby sounds a bit large  Back the timing off a tad and drop the idle as low as it will go in gear (if that doesnt help Turn it off in gear if its auto)Flattop pistons bring the comp higher than 98 fuel can handle.
it is common for 250 xflow motors to ping and run on also, especially when modded, my 200 bhp xd xflow had the exact same issues.

The XF that modded for a bloke had no probs at all,... had 10:1 comp ratio, 600 vac secondary ( modified ), roller rockers, 35/75 ( roughly ) Crow cam, adjustable timing chain set, was set to 3 dgs advance ( the cam had a 1 dg advance on the grind), regraphed XD dizzy with hardened gear, with MSD 6AL ignition, 4 speed manual. Didn't run on, didn't ping, ran on 95 PULP. Idled at 800 rpm.
