hey all,

fluid is looking a little low, so i thought id top it up.

bought some castrol power steering fluid the other day because was only stuff i could see at repco. only got it then cause i happened to be driving past.

now. the gregories states some mobil(numbers here) fluid. had a quick search and some people here have said dexronIII

now. the stuff i bought, according to the castrol website is..

Castrol Power Steering Fluid
Suitable for most power steering systems where the following specifications are nominated: Dexron®, Dexron® II & Dexron® III, SAE 10W or 10W-20 engine oil, ISO 32 or 46 hydraulic oil, Ford M2C-33 F/G, Ford M2C-138 CJ, Ford M2C-166H, Ford Mercon, Ford SQM-2C-9010A and Mitsubishi Power Steering Fluid.

Would it be safe to top up the fluid with this stuff??

IIRC PS system fluid capacity is only ~1L

i dont see any problem with using it

IIRC the mobil stuff you're after is mobilfluid 424, but dex 3 has been used for years

i cant believe people actually buy "power steering fluid" tho..... 300ml bottles in coles for $8.95 and 1L bottles of dex 3 right next to it for $7.50

I know it's gold.

But some people wont believe you when you tell them. They think it's better to go with the bottle of PSF after you explain the financial benefits of buying the Dexron III. Hey, their money not mine.

Be careful though because I believe starting with the NL fairlane DEXIII is no longer recommended. The Valvoline book recommends formula F PSF, I'm not sure if it's the same as any other ATF, I'll have to look into it.

mobilfluid 424 is a hydraulic oil that is not suitable for auto trans systems therefore it is not compatible with dextron based products. IIRC the spec was changed to mobilfluid 424 to reduce pump wear and noise.

You will need to be absolutely sure you have a dextron based fluid in the PS before topping it up with the castrol fluid you have bought. Otherwise you will need to do a full flush of the PS.

Has anyone tried that miracle power steering fluid from super cheap auto. stops leaks, reconditions sterring arms etc etc.

I whacked it in the ford, good as gold i reckon.

Costs $14. Apparently its the perfect wear preventative,
makes old like new monyana monyana

Absolutely yes. Probably ok to use as brake fluid as well but dont quote me on that.

I just use BTR LE trans fluid in the power steering system as that's what i have lying around....

ok then, how would you go about flushing the power steering system to go from dex 3 to 424?
