Hey guys
Was on the way to get petrol and 1km to go and she splutters and dies. I got about 6L of premium in her and tried to start but no luck, she just didnt want to kick over! Whats wrong with her? Does the fuel pump die that easily? Sparks burnt out?

Does it crank over ?
Could of sucked up s**t from the tank and blocked the fuel filter

most likely killed the pump. run them dry and that happens

Yeah the pumps don't like to run dry, they depend on the petrol for their lubrication, so it's probably dead.
When you replace the pump, make sure you use the new strainer supplied with a new pump & fit a new fuel filter as well, you will have sucked up so much crap out of the bottom of the tank that it's not funny! Cheers ToranaGuy

get under there and hit the fuel tank, hard, while someone is cranking it. may jerk it back into life

I'm betting that it has an airlock in one of the fuel lines ? Fuel pumps don't normaly die that easy

My mums ED wouldn't run on petrol after an engine reco, they said her injectors were shagged. I removed the fuel line form the rail, stuck it in a bottle & did a prime test. Worked fine, hooked the line back up to the rail, then did a couple primes before kicking it over. Runs fine on petrol since. Cheers ToranaGuy

Hate to ask the obvious - does it sound like it's priming that first few seconds with IGN on.
If you can't tell, earth the top right pin of the diagnosis connector with IGN on. If the pump still runs, you might get away with just a filter change or cleaning the strainer. I'm guessing you don't know when the filter was last changed, so that's no waste either way.

electronic fuel pumps don't like being run dry. the use the petrol (petrol is cold) as a coolant/lubricant.
run them dry and they overheat and seize. and yes they do die that easily. they are spinning very fast when running. in this instance your fuel pump may have been old or on the way out anyway. you've ran it dry and it's given up. try my trick. it may jerk it into life. if it works drive straight home. if not. change it where it is. it's not that hard

could be worse could be like the current hiluxes, mate has a long range that's he's killed about 3 pumps in, toyota say it has to be submersed to actually keep it cool.
but as suggested if you've whacked some fuel in it try giving it a knock. I run my car well into 0 frequently, once though, it did run out of fuel, had about 4k left, died a mate towed me down the road, and put a bit more fuel in it and it worked.

ive been told you have to keep at least 1/4 of a tank of fuel to keep the pump cool, if you keep runnin them low before you fill em up they get a loud noise and eventualy stop workin
