Hey everyone...woke up this morning went to praise 'allah' and came back home to see if my car was fine.

I turned the key and it warmed up all good...but when i revved it there was a rattling noise...popped the hood and managed to source it to the front end of the engine...im guessing timing case area. Hope its nothing serious :S

My rear muffler seems to rattle a bit too...but only after it settles down after a rev...hopefully the muffler is not rooted because i got that put in about 2 months ago and im sure it has worn in before the drags.

Main problem I want to know is the rattling at the front of the engine.

possibly a slightly lose timing chain or guide. Have you checked or your belts etc? It could also be just a dry pulley.

something i did not want to hear =(....to fix the guides I'd have to take the timing cover off? and thus the head?? I was planning on getting the head shaven and an AU head gasket put in so i might as well get that checked......would it be hard...I am handy with the tools..though i don't have a torque wrench and such...

cheers

You could do it all yourself except making sure the head is flat and true.
You'll need torque wrenches and someone with know how to guide and help you.
If you were going to get a cam now is good time as well.

First step would be to take belt off the motor, start it up and see if the sound has gone, just in case it is a pulley or alternator. If the noise remains with these disconnected then time to delve deeper.

I did an oil, and oil filter change before, topped up some radiator fluid and some general maintenance...after the oil change it seemed to shut up......i left the car to idle for about 10 mins or so and it doesn't rattle as much as before but still does a bit when it hits 2000rpm. before and after 2000rpm its quiet...might still check it out. if i do end up pulling apart i might as well change the head gasket to an AU and get a cam in and head shaven =D.

does the timing case area get filled up with oil as well once the car runs?

Sounds a bit like what mine is doing, except mine does it at about 3000rpm and is quiet before/after that just like yours.
You can check my video if you want and see if it's the same thing: http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=37759

Cheers,
Dave.

Hey voxace. That's exactly what mine is doing...and after an oil change it kinda died down a bit but still does it at around 2000RPM. All I know is that its coming from the timing cover or something.

I was told by my mechanic that there are 2 plastic pins that point upwards on either side when you take the rocker cover off. If you remove the rocker cover off on an angle you could snap one of them while taking it off. Not sure what they are for but they said one of mine is missing. Dunno where it went.

Have you managed to fix it?

Nope not yet, but mine is coming from the same area so it must be the same thing.

I'm going to take the timing cover off and have a look when I'm finished UNI for the year.
I just need it to hold out for another two weeks, fingers crossed!

I finish uni this coming Friday but I am really bad with the engine bits and pieces...Probably end up killing it rather then fix it.

If you do find the problem I wouldn't mind knowing either.

Cheers

No worries.
It takes the fun out of the car when you can't rev it without making a crappy rattling noise!

It sure does...feel a bit embarassed when the car makes that noise when launching from the traffic lights. But it still goes :D

The long time chain guid that the 10mm retainer bolt goes through on the lh side of the motor is broken, always happens, timing kit through her. Timing cover off, drop the sump, maybe even sump off, might aswell do some veneir gears while u are there and cam it.

I work for a Mcinereny ford, see it all the time.
