as the title says rattling noise under rocker thought it might be a pulley but noise increases when i take the cap off, under the rocker i could move the chain side to side about a 10mm, so im guessin somthing to do with the tensioner, has anyone come across this problem, an is the tensioner an easy job to do? and how much would a new tensioner cost?

hey mate i have the same problem i found it to be the cam chain guide
mine has snapped and by what your saying so has yours, with that said it could possibly be the tensioner i suggest taking th rocker cover off and having a look before you start pulling the tensioner out good luck |

i also have this damn noise, only when its cold but for a few minutes then goes away. it started when i changed the lifters, i asked for and they said the lifters need to be measured when putting them in and have to be exact otherwise they will make noise. it makes sense that it happened after i put the new lifters in aswell.
anyone else shead some light on this topic. |

i pulled the timing case off the only thing i saw that came close to a tensioner was the 14mm bolt under the powersteering pump it was wierd looking with a spring that pushed the guide. n the guides seemed ok how can i tell if the tensioner is stuffed??? thanks for ur help guys

its not much help but, over time the timing chain stretches to the point where the tensioner reaches its limit on the guide then you need a new chain before it breaks. there is a slim chance you need to replace the spring, just depends on how old the chain is. :s
edit: if it only makes the noise when u first start the car then its normal.. it takes a few seconds to pump oil up to the top of the head.

mine does it for a few minutes until the car is warm then give it a rev past 1100 rpm and it will dissapear. and if i rev it to 1100rpm when its making the noise the noise dissapears. whats this mean |

it could be a stretched chain unless your oil pump is worn, but then you would have low oil pressure. even starting it on a steep driveway could do the same thing where the oil is drains before it reaches the chain. i thought my last chain was fine cos it did the same thing on idle (but it was quieter than the initial startup) just untill it got up to temp but when i got the topend rebuilt it was actually rooted.

is it bad for the engine, should i get it fixed asap?
it really only started to happen when i put the new lifters in, i did tap them in with a little hammer into the rocker gear, could i of damaged one or more of them? |

ive pulled out the chain guides cam gear, the intake side guide look ok and the drivers side has worn 1 to 2 mm, the only way i can tell if the chain is strecht is if i hold it up to a new one right?? and the tensioner was in all the way. is there any other guide that might have droped? becoz the chain look real close to the sump on passenger side near the crankshaft. thanks for the comment as well guys

tappet noise is different to a chain rattle, so not sure
i think the only way to tell if the chain has stretched is to take off the rocker cover and grab the chain from the top of the cam gear and pull upward. if it moves more than 2mm from the sprocket then the chain needs to be replaced. guide dampers should be replaced also.

guess ill have a look tomorrow, ill also start the engine with the rocker cover off and work out where the noise is definately coming from.
does oil spray straight up when the rocker covers off or side ways, ill put some plastic down. |

yeah its fine you might get a little splatter after a while on idle, just dont rev it! lol, u will need to wipe up any oil with a bit of degreaser on a cloth before you put the cover back on to get a good seal.

NVIOUS, from memory there are 3 guides/dampers (there is a lower damper) also if the chain is ok check the regulator o-ring and look for wear on the tensioner piston.
