Hi my starter motor blew today, just wanting to know if there are any common reasons cause i have had a few elec problems lately.

Dont want to replace it and it to blow again as it is a EA MPFI - pain to get out by the loks of it.

and have been told to use an AU starter - does anyone know rough price of one?

well mate...if you need one I have one that is basically brand new. Replaced it in mid 2005 but didn't drive it through out 2006...

Anyways one common problem with the starter motor dying would be a short. have a look at the wiring around starter motor.

If not have a look at the battery terminal to see if the main positive/negative wires are still in good condition and not corroded. They are 17 years old so most wires may have corroded fallen off and shortened something. have a roam around the engine bay and look for any crappy wires.

hope that helps

phong =P~

I would say more than likely the windings on the armature have shorted. The resin insulatoin cracks over time and moisture gets in and corrodes then shorts especially under laod (upon starting)

i saw in some performance mag that its best to replace an EA-ED starter with one from an EL as they are a much better unit (not just cos they are newer).

but i agree with phongus, check the battery terminals for corrosion and make sure the positive cable is bolted in tight behind the starter.

edited: spelling mistake.

The starter motors are the same from XP - AUIII
BA has a different starter motor.
It is possible that the materials they use are better in the "new" ones.

just another thought for you:

when my starter motor died in my EA, it wasent from a corroded wire or somthing i went over the whole car, and found nothing wrong with any wires the battery was a little low but it still kicked it over just fine, it was the part underneath the cog that was snaped off, it sounded like it was dying because it would barly wind the car over mostly not at all., and yes they are a b**ch to replace.
