After a spirited drive last nite I got home and for some reason I lookedunder my car and saw that the cat was glowing red hot. Now I'm not sure if this is normal or not but I'm a little concerned the cat is supposed to be a hi flow(not sure of the brand) and it's only 6 months old. Does anybody know what may cause this??

I'm running extractors and a 2.5" mandrel system with 1 muffler and a resi at the back.

Blocked cat, timing is retarded or lean air fuel ratio.
Did you happen to look at the extractors?

Extractors were fine. It seems to be running rich if anything but I think the cat may be blocked, it's making a donging noise on the inside. Time to give it a little bash out me thinks.

Well put it this way, if you had the factory cat still in it wouldn't have glowed red, it would have just melted internally. :P

That's what happened to mine.

As far as I know the High flow cats are built to be able to transfer more heat to the outside and avoid the internals melting into one clump.

Overly rich can cause a cat to get extra hot.

its bad to punch a cat out. RSPCA does not like that.

But gutting is fun, if not messy.

So you burnt a 6 month old cat. hollow cats sound aweful, just get it tubed, actually get it replaced its a MONSTER fine for no cat, same fine as having a screamer pipe.

any power gain difference between when the cat was new and when it was gutted?????????

After some heavy driving my 2.5in magnaflow 200cpi cat, makes a ticking sound for a few minutes after the car is turned off. Probably the outer heat shield casing expanding???

cats are meant to operate at upwards of 700°C

So some glowing will be normal.

In the dark 400°C will cause a slight glow. (700°C will be visibly red in daylight)
