Hi Team,

Quick question......about 4 months ago had a redback 2 1/2 inch cat back system put on my AUIII XR6 (Redback). Not all that happy with the note - would things improved if the rear resonator came off?

Cheers

I assume you are after a deeper note? Removing anything will make it louder.
Ring the people who fitted it and ask them :)

I dare say the exhaust note will take a turn for the worse if you remove the resonator.
I orginally had my catback fitted with a straight-through rear section, although eventually the drone annoyed me and I was worried about the EPA.
Had a rear resonator fitted for $80, minimal drone, a little quieter than before and improved the overall sound 100%

By all means experiment with your current system, but if you dont like it as is, I doubt you'll be able to change the overall sound by enough to change your mind.
Might have to go a better quality catback to get the sound you're after? Maybe S/S sounds better than mild steel?

Edit: I assume you have a single middle muffler and then one resonator after the diff, rather than 2 mufflers plus resonator?

Nothing worse than a dead droning 6cyl.

I'd leave the resi on or at the least replace it with a hotdog.

i have a redback exhaust and i had the rear hot dog removed.(because it wasnt loud enough for me)
your car will become louder if you remove it..
mine has more of a raspier sound than before but it doesnt drone at all..
but mine is a manual..
so i guess it may drone if you have a sludge o matic..

here is a sound clip the rear car is under a car port becked up to a shed so it echo's abit

I had a redback 2 muffler system and the exhaust note wasn't much better or louder than stock. I removed the back muffler and then it became droney.

Especially at about 80km/hr. And when you floored it from a stand still it let out a really loud drone dull exhaust note. Basically I can pick out any 6cyl falcon running a redback exhaust. Just listen for the loud bellowing drone noise.

I then fitted a custom Lukey Race series muffler with custom pipes. Way better sound and doesn't drone.
And i also got a performance increase especially down low.

RDP(redcliffe performance) dynoed redback exhausts on e-series and found no gain compared to stock exhausts. So you may aswell throw your money down the street.

I learnt the expensive way. Mass produced exhaust systems that hang of racks are s**t compared to a full custom system.

cheers and have a nice day.

I went with a 2.5" cat-back Redback system and I think it sounds great. Huge improvement on the stock sound with little to no drone at all. I got a mate to take it for a drive so I could hear it from outside and it had a nice sound. Not droning, not obnoxiously loud.... just right.

i just ripped off the res on my ute. i have a 2 1/2 jmm setup.

Sounds so much tougher. With the res it sounded a bit too much like a jap engine now it barks. But i also didn't replace it with pipe just dumped at diff.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all your thoughts - very much appreciated.

Yes, it's just the single muffler / resonator setup, and i was expecting a bit more of a beefier note, but like a couple of you have said it's only slightly (to me anyway) louder than stock. And honestly, i do like my cars loud. So perhaps the remove resonator - add hotdog would be the way to go?

Cheers

well this is what mine sounds like with a single muffler and Genie extractors, i dont think it sounds ricy at all and there is no DRONE. Then again it was a custom job and the muffler that is left in place is just infront of the diff.
