So my water pump is leaking, through that little hole on the front of it. All I did was put some new coolant in the car, it's been sitting around for months now.
I've been told that the hole starts leaking when the pump is shagged. Should I just chuck in some seal up? Or replace the pump? I just did some reading, and it's called the water pump weep hole, it will drip coolant when the seal on the pump shaft fails. So does that mean it's a matter of removing the pump and replacing the gasket and the pump shaft seal? Or new water pump? They don['t look hard to replace. That means it's shagged, the seal and bearing are obviously gone so go buy a new one.

not hard to replace at all just make sure you get a new pulley with the pump if you don't have a gear puller to get the old pulley off!

No they are pressed on. I got mine with the pulley already on it.

ford have a special tool to press the pulley on which is basically a long bolt being screwed into the pump shaft and a nut is then turned to press the pulley on, it's impossible to do with just a nut and bolt by hand though.
i think repco sell a aftermarket ford pulley removal and install tool for around $100ish. have however seen mechanics just rattle gun the pulley on using a bolt and washers, be careful when it bottoms out.

do what i did a few times,
go to ford service, tell them you got quoted $70 from Repco for a pump, they'll match it (rrp is $154) and buy the pulley too ($26) Don't even bother to remove your old pulley its plastic with a metal bush and made ONLY to be installed once. I know a lot of ppl use powermax and other various aftermarket pumps and have no problem.... but if you look at the build quality and impellor thickness the genuine beats the lot! also they'll install the pulley with a hydraulic press for Free. And Make SURE they put a nut under the impellor to press the shaft to the pulley (if you see it you'll know what i mean) I've seen people press the impellor and not realising the shaft is actually 'recessed'.

i've fitted the pulley before by sticking a drift in the vice to support the centre shaft of the pump, get someone to hold the pump and knock the new pulley on with a hammer.
if u dont support the centre shaft u'll knock the shaft thru the impeller and it bottoms out on the tin shroud at the back of the pump.

I've got the proper tool but the thread is stripped so i have to repair it.
You'll find most big workshops will have the tool, but buy a new pump with a steel pulley already attached. |

i think the ones we sell at work don't have the pulley fitted (Repco - GMB or Silverline units, can't remember brand of the pulleys we stock, something with an N maybe in red boxes). I'll have to try and get a tradie to do it for me if one of the local ones come in on the weekend. i'm far to poxy to pay full price or get a genuine one.

The 4 bolts haolding the pump in, they look like there behind the pulley so you can get a ratchet in, is there a trick to this? I had a quick squiz last night.

thank f**k for my new ratcheting spanners, otherwise that coulda taken a while, it's off now, and it looks pretty old, it's a GMB unit with a genuine Ford pulley on it.

yeah i reckon, there cheap from work, and i'm very broke at the moment, besides they do the job!!!
