Hi everyone, I have got a new cam and am looking into purchasing a vernier gear. I was wondering if you use retardant timing or advanced timing?

I thought for these you used retardant timing but I have read in another thread that it is advanced timing that should be used?

And what is best for the EL with the AU hybrid head specifically?

Cheers

Ideally you would want to dial the cam in as per the specs given to you by the cam company who ground or supplied the cam..

But about advancing/retarding cam timing, you would advance the timing if you wanted to bring the powerband down or retard the timing if you wanted it to bring on torque higher up. I'd say for a street engine you would advance it a few degrees and run it on premium fuel but it all depends on your style of driving i suppose.

If you have a reground cam it'l probably be out a few degrees. My reground cam was retarded 2.5 degrees without dialing it in, so i had to advance it 2.5 degrees to get the correct lift at TDC.

if you can afford it get the car on a dyno and adjust the vernier gear while its on the rollers to get it just right. I got tired of trying with a dial gauge and getting no where. took a couple of hours and some burnt fingers, on the upside it only takes me 10 minutes tops to get every thing apart to adjust the cam gear now.
