I knew I should stop being lazy and finish off the Head gasket change over doco...would have come in handy for you to read with pretty pictures...

Then again you can always have a read of this thread in the Tehcnical Documents section if you like to understand more before you break stuff...this thread was done for head gasket change, but you won't be needing to follow the whole thread for a camshaft change.

http://www.fordmods.com/forums/head-gas ... 22726.html

If you don't use retainers for your lifters/HLA/tappets or whatever you want to call them, when putting them back in the rocker arms, you can do as I have. Clean the remains of the crusted up retainers off the tappets and then put them back into the rocker arms. Lubricate the tappets a bit before you put them back in, then using some masking tape, tape around the rocker arm and the tappets so that they don't fall out as you put them back on the head...see picture below if you don't get what I mean.

thanks mate, so i dont HAVE to use retainers? how do the lifters not just fall out?

[color=black]Ended up getting a bag of about 15 retainers for about $20 from AutoPro, would recommend not being cheap to everyone]

you got any idea how to remove the belt? cant find the pulley and the only pulley that is not part of something else like the waterpump/powersteering/etc is one that only has 2 small bolts either side..... ??????? will try get a pic up if you dont understand what i mean

The retainers hold the lifters in if you replace the retainers. If you don't use them, they WILL fall out, unless you use masking tape to hold them in place while you put the rocker assembly back on the head.

When you put the rocker assembly back on the head, tighten the bolts up by hand starting from the inside bolts and working your way outwards towards the sides untill all bolts are putting a bit of pressure on the rocker assembly. Then you can start removing the tape, the tappets will fall out a bit and then hit the top of the valve springs. If they look like they are going to fall out of their rocker arms, tighten the bolts a little bit more to lower the rocker arms closer.

Then tighten up the bolts (again starting from the inside bolts first and working your way outwards) until all the bottom faces of the Pedestals (the big chunks on the rocker assembly where the bolts go through into the head and hold the rocker assembly into place) are in contact with the top surface of the head. Once they are all touching the head, you can then start tightening all the bolts to 20Nm...once again starting from the inside and working your way outwards.

He wont be able to tell if its dialed in from a pic. If it hasnt been dialed in properly, i'd say just just leave it at "0" on the vernier.

And remove each allen key bolt in the vernier one at a time and apply some medium strength threadlocker (permatite from Super Cheap for example) and screw back in so its tight, but not too tight that you'll bend the washers.

then have the cam dialed in by someone down the track who knows how to do it when you can afford it.

ok sounds good that's what I'll do. BUT THIS BLOODY TENSIONER!! how the f**k do I get the tensioner assembly out?? Do I pull it out from the inside of the motor??Can I just fish the bullet out and then put that bit back together and push it into the hole and turn?

Your other thread did not give clear instructions on how to get the assembly out...

I've got the cam in, the gear and chain on, shims in the lifting gear... just need to put it back together but fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuk!

That thread covers every aspect of the tensioner, including removal.
You need a tool to fit the holes in the outer sleeve of the tensioner to remove it.

From that thread...

i made a tool to remove it

u need a bit off steel bout 20mm x 4mm x 300mm or so

find a drill bit the same size as the holes
bout 4mm from memory and cut the shank into 2 pieces about 10mm long

then drill 2 holes in the piece of steel the right distance apart then tap them in

bingo instant retainer tool

Also PLEASE get yourself a workshop manual, 99.9% of this stuff is covered, and it's alot quicker then coming online and waiting for someone to answer.
I'm surprised FordFairmont hasn't lost patience yet LOL
