ok i been getting this very strange sound coming from my engine and i've realised it only does it when the oil dipstick is pushed all the way in so i guess it's pressure being released somewhere. ...i've noticed that the rocker cover is leaking a little bit of oil at the front and on the exhaust side but don't think this is making the noise...i sat my phone in the engine bay to record the sound it makes when i turn off the engine. wonder if anyone has any idea

thanks

So if you remove the dipstick the noise isn't there?
Very very strange, so if you run it with no dipstick, does it spray oil out of the tube?
Take the stick out and hold your hand a cpl of inches above the tube as it's running, give it a few revs and see if you cop oil on your hand.
Also take out the PCV valve from the rocker cover and clean it (degrease and blow it out).
Usually only hear noises like that from the cooling system, is the oil clean?

sorry i havent heard the sound yet since im limited to using rapid share to download.

what about the dipstick hitting something when its pushed in all the way? im not sure if there are a lot of mechanical parts in the sump but could be a possibility?

yeah its a strange noise to say the least. if the car runs for a while and builds up pressure it makes a loud whining noise which stops once i pull the dipstick out a little. it definately seems like pressure is being lost somewhere. could it be a rear main seal or something like that? the engines not loosing any oil apart from a tiny bit around the rocker cover. l i haven't tried running it with no dipstick. the oil is clean as i just replaced it last week. is it safe to drive it with the dipstick not pushed in all the way? gona have to get ths checked out soon.

Take the stick out and put your hand over as i suggested, i was wondering if it's building up crank case pressure.
Start with the simple things.

Piston rings? OK, before taking me too seriously I know f**k all and I'm definately not a mechanic. But I have heard smarter people talking about when the rings go, the sump gets pressurised which = strange s**t happening with the dipstick. Maybe the noises are that pressure seeping out from other loactions?

I think this is along the same lines as what Walker's getting at.
