G'day peeps, long time no posts for me! Been struggling with the silver brick lately... Head recon at Xmas time, dizzy crapped itself in January and an injector went out to lunch a week ago... Fun times.
After chucking new injectors and fuel filter in it today with an oil change and new air filter she feels 10,000,000% better from takeoff up until 3000rpm when it feels choked/stuttering and won't rev to redline.
New bits on the car:
New/recond head.
New thermostat.
New dizzy and coil.
New leads and plugs.
New injectors.
New oxy sensor.
New fuel filter.
I'm thinking it's either map sensor, blocked cat or maybe my new dizzy/coil/leads/plugs are cactus. It pulls from idle to 3000 ok then stutters after under load. Free revving it's fine. Oh and also warm start idle is woolly as till the oxy sensor fires off. Any ideas from the gurus? Am I on the right track? TIA

Have you correctly set your timing?

Or perhaps your poor fuel pump is dying in the a*** after 3000rpm, might not have enough pressure

Have to wait 2 mins after bridging for it to stumble and almost stall,, then set it.

don't you have to set it to 10degrees? im not 100% sure on that, but 10 rings a bell for something

When I put an EL ECU into my ED (to wire up BBM and Knock sensor) - I found it needed to be set to 10* - ie. same as the original ED ECU timing. Setting it to zero made it run like crap - I'm pretty sure others with EL ECU in earlier car have had the same thing. That's of course NOT an EL so maybe not relevant.

I wouldnt have expected that, which timing case were you running?. i have have an el engine in my ED (on the ED ECU) and its set to 10BTDC so the timing mark on the case is 15mm to the right of the actual point the timing is set at.

That was with completely otherwise standard ED engine - so 10* according to the ED case marks (in diagnostic mode). What happened is that I pulled out the ED ECU and plugged in the EL ECU and just fired her up and away I went... - was months later that I got an inkling there was meant to be some difference in base timing (bottom end was never quite as tough with the EL ECU - so I thought "AHA!" ) - and when i tried setting it up to zero it was crap - so i put it back to 10 and all happy again. Pretty sure I've read others having the same thing. Whether that has any bearing on an actual EL I don't know.

Were you running a bb manifold with the el ecu? May be why it didn't feel as good down low. El ecu would be set uo with timing and fuel maps for the bbm down low

Yeah, I had an EF BBM fitted (this was all in about 1999 / 2000 that I did it) - I put the EL ECU in specifically to drive the BBM - and then I also opportunistically fitted the knock sensor up as well. The difference between ED ECU + BBM on long path and EL ECU + BBM on long path has always made me scratch my head.

With the ED ECU I had to have the BBM locked either in long path or short path of course.

In long path with the ED ECU (and my JMM cam) I VERY nearly had tyre spinning off the line with auto (effortless with manual) and neck snapping instantaneous acceleration when I poked the accelerator at low speed - BUT - only below about 2000rpm - as SOON as the tacho reached 2000 (pretty much straight away in most circumstances) the engine would rattle something shocking (pinging) and lose power drastically.

On short path the ED ECU bottom end felt a lot weaker than with the EL ECU (on long path in the bottom end) but the top end felt much the same as the EL ECU (switched to short).

I've always meant to try and get that under 2000rpm ED ECU wildness programmed into an EF or EL tune. I've recently got a programmer from Ti Performance and have a fairly great "conventional" tune going now - so might next have a look at transposing the bottom end from the ED maps. I've looked at them and you can see big differences, but of course it'll take a fair bit of thought to try and actually pick what's needed and then fit the two together.

THANK FEK FOR THEM INTERNETS!!! I was following the Gregorys book procedure on changing the base timing previously, and tuning it while it was still doing the ERST. Turns out I was driving around 15-20 degrees retarded. Lol.
