yeah looked under my car yesterday and there were a few drops of coolent under the car. i looked at the coolant resovoir and it has been overfilled (the leak is near where the oil filter is on the ed like near the bottom of the radiator), just wondering can a leak be caused by the resovoir being overfilled???

Just trying to see if I understand your problem correctly.
The coolant on the ground is on the left side of the engine near oil filter correct? The reservoir is on the right.

The coolant could only be coming from the reservoir if the overflow hose was long and extended to the otherside of the engine, most don't.
My guess is you have a leak on the left side of the engine. It could be; welshplugs, thermostat housing, top hose, heater hoses, or head gasket to name a few.

Do you use a strong coloured coolant? This can help locate the leak as the colour will stain the area it is coming from.

okay when you are standing face on to the car the reovoir is on the left, the leak is coming from the right hand side (passenger side), and it seems to have gotten worse, there is like a small catchment pan or something that contains a fair amount of coolant,. so i have a feeling it may be a cracked hose or loose connction, as my dad had the same issue with his EL Fairmont.

It might be the waterpump as when my one when cactus I didnt realise it at first as the coolant was collecting on to the gravel tray and being channelled down to the back of the engine. I was sratching my head at first until I jacked up me EL and traced the leak back. I thought worst case scenario at first of a Head gasket :x :? :( :D

I had the steel heater hose coming from the thermostat housing leak from a small pin hole due to rust. easy to replace.

Where it looks like its leaking, wipe the area clean and then if it starts to leak again you can find out where its coming from. Then once that has been done, you can sort out what needs to be replaced etc.

Good luck hopefully its not too serious.

Check out your radiator tank, the side the top hose goes into, this is the Hot side of the radiator and this tank gets brittle with age they have a history of leaking from the seals as the tanks get brittle and warp.

yeah we had a goodish look at it and cant seem to find the problem so it has been booked in from the mechanic who we bought it off, he is doing the work for free, to check it, and solve the problem. so it should be all good, but we will still try to source the problem.

I to had this same problem with my rig just last Saturday. The end of the tube coming out the bottom of the thermostat housing and the steel part of the heater valve were both badly corroded. Cleaned them up and replaced the heater hose between and no more leaks. Still have to replace the tube and valve but. Getting the hose back on to the tube is a real joy. NOT.
