I have recently noticed that when I start up the car when its cold and give it a rev I get a puff of black smoke out exhaust. When I put my foot down and let it rev out (auto), when it kicks into the next gear, I have a puff of black smoke aswell. Why is this? My dad seems to think it needs an oil change and new oil filter, aswell as rings are stuffed.. any other ideas? I have a recon engine coming soon, but until then I want to fix this problem. Please help if you can

Cheers

Black smoke usally means that there is an excess of fuel and its all not being burn up in the chambers like it should be. check your map sensor and maybe chuck a new air filter in, would hurt to do the oil change as well

Another reason for smoking may be valve runners. If they're thrashed out, oil gets past and presto, smoke. But its usually a blue colour. My car smokes like a chimney on EVERY start up, but i have done a compression test and all six cylinders are on 180. So im putting it down to valve runners...i hope :x

On start up its usually valve stem seals, oil has leaked into the cylinders abd then burns. With the smoke as you rev it its normally just the residue in the exuast system being forced out or its running rich. When was it last tuned and had a full service including airfilter, plugs and leads?

Just like to explore this a bit further if I can. CPI EA with 160k on it, uses no oil, starts and runs like a clock with one little exception. When cold, i.e. until the gauge moves out of the blue area, it chaffs black smoke at idle, just as though you have the choke out too far. This cause it to miss a bit. Obviously it is running too rich when cold. Any serious ideas. To date it has had:
Plugs
Leads
Cap
Rotor
New MAP sensor and hose
Air Filter
Oil and filter
PCV valve

Anything else I should be looking for?

Thanks

My EL XR6 does this as well, serviced not long ago, head reco'ed 12 months ago but for me it only does it for the first 2 or 3 minutes and only when accelerating. Oh and I replaced the MAP sensr not long ago too, when the MAP sensor dies its quite funny 120kms to a full tank and nothin but thick black smoke out the zorst hehehe

All Falcons run stupidly rich at WOT, particularly those with XR ECU's.

Give it a sharp prod in neutral and it will puff out a bit of black smoke.

Hold it WOT when accelerating and when it does the 1 - 2 shift, it will puff out a nice cloud of black smoke.

Plug, leads and filter will fix this a little, but generally you will still get the nice black smoke when you push the card hard.
