Because it isn't the tailshaft limiting it to 180km/h, it's the exptention housing on the BTR, when output shaft revs get too high, the extention housing *can* let go.

KWIKXR, I'm trying for a subtle "stealth" effect: a solid performance increase, yet maintain good fuel economy, plus stay within a modest budget.

I want it to look "factory" but better - a bit of paint and polish. Though the chrome headers do give it away a bit.

I want it sound and feel "factory" but better. The Tickford mandrel-bent cat-back sounds very nice, and the mods just make it better. The cam is enough to make it go well, yet keep the idle mostly smooth and not sound too "cammy".

It would go harder with a bigger cam, high stall convertor, mandrel bent intake pipe, 3.9 gears, remove a muffler or two, etc. But those mods would be too obvious for my tastes. My philosophy is something like: "Walk softly, but carry a big stick."

5 speed manuals dont have speed limiters..
its only the std 4 speed auto that has the speed limiter, due to the extension housing failing/breaking from harmonic vibration with speeds over 180 causing the tailshaft to drop and break everything around it...

Been there, done that.

I think I will go for 190-195km speed limiter with the J3 chip. Has anyone had a bad experience doing this?

Thanks guys.

THIS happened at 192km/h. Thankfully on a dyno.

I remember reading that thread about data_mine's letting go on the dyno, don't know what ratio he was running in the diff but for some reason i keep thinking he had the rev limiter set to a touch over 6000rpm..

Anyway, if you plan on removing the speed limiter or raising it, it might pay to have a tail shaft loop fitted just in case something decides to let go a high speed/rpm

Rev limiter raised to 6250rpm
Speed limiter set to 255km/h
Had a 3.45:1 diff

Tail shaft loop won't help - it's the gearbox that fails.

Learn to live with the fact you drive a wagon, not a drag car.

That's messy! Thanks for the fair warning.

I'm unlikely to hit the limiter, except on a dyno, so I'm happy to live with it. I have driven the car for five years without discovering the limiter. With my current mods I am not going to exceed 160kmh in the quarter, so it's not a limitation anyway.

Thanks for all your help and advice. I think I have my answer (picture worth 1000 words).

Just keep in mind my experience before trying that again. It may not happen the first time or the second. But mine had spent plenty of time on the dyno (I was experimenting with tuning the ECU). It will happen. And you really don't want to be in it when it does go.

And for f**k sake don't do that kinda s**t on the road. (don't lie, there's no way either is powerful enough to reach those speeds on any track or strip).

I don't want to sound preachy, but what do you think would've happened if it wasn't strapped down on a dyno, and I was hurtling down some road somewhere. Note the it was violent enough to set off the airbags.

Its wasnt on a track no...... and you have a good point about not happening now but happening eventually. Wasnt trying to sound like a C**k kunt but was asking a serious question about them being limited. And i since then have fixed my driving style (mostly) since then dues to the fact of writing of a AU fairmont at 60ks on a dirt road and that was scary enough.

HOLY s**t

I was not aware of this. My parents drive an ED auto XR6 wagon, has 2.5" stainless steel catback and rest is stock.

I was driving in country vic a few weeks ago and got right up to the limiter (speedo was showing 200 lol, it's about 10% out according to my gps) god damn I'm lucky this didn't happen or my parents would have killed me.... (they have owned the xr6 wagon since brand new and it's in mint condition, never been daily driven just a holiday car)

Ah good thread answered my question as my brother has a EF Xr6 wagon and it is speed limited but my EF manual sedan isn't. I thought someone might of pinched his ecu. Thanks for the info guys.

There is another dyno on the North Shore called Hi-Velocity - I haven't tried him, though. I will try to remember to PM you his details tomorrow.

Cool that would be great, thanks man. Will be interesting to see how it goes after the J3 chip, sounds like that RH24B cam is good for a bit of grunt then, Adrian at Franklin's mixed up a combo grind using the RH24B for my EF and it seems to go quite well.. Not sure if i should stick with it or go for something with a bit more of a 'punch'[/quote]

I haven't used him (yet), but others rave about him. He is a BMW specialist, so he at least knows one end of a straight-6 from the other :D
