I had my car on the dyno for the first time today (woohoo), but couldn't complete the run in 3rd gear as it hit the speed limiter at 160kmh with only 4800rpm. I thought the XR6s didn't have a speed limiter? It has the aluminium driveshaft, but maybe the extra length of the wagon and 3.45 gears makes the limiter necessary. Anyone have experience with this?

I know Brocky drove an EF XR6 5-speed sedan with 3.45 gears to 231kmh - clearly no limiter there.

I'm getting a custom TI Performance J3 chip done, and wonder if it's safe to increase the speed limiter while I'm at it. I was thinking of going to maybe 190kmh to allow it just reach the 5700rpm rev limiter in 3rd (in case I get into the 13's - I wish :) ). Is this dangerous? What do you think?

Thanks all.

When i had my EF GLI i put a EF xr6 ECU into it. When it was on the dyno, it topped out at about 230 clicks in forth (t5 manual) at 5750rpm.

I was under the impression that all EF XR6 ECUs didnt have a speed limit, and they only brought it in for the ELs.

Hmm, thats interesting alright. Always thought the XR range had no speed limit, pretty sure my old man's EF XR6 doesn't have one..

Do you know if the ECU is the original? I read somewhere that normal Falcon and Fairmont's etc were speed limited to 180km/h (think my Fairmont is limited with the Ghia (Tickford) ECU but i havent yet tested it) so i wonder if maybe the ECU you have is out of another non-XR model with a different diff ratio - just throwing that out there..

Which dyno operator did you take it to if you don't mind me asking? Any idea on how much she's making at the rears? Im running similar mods as you, but can't get a dyno run for a while as i will only be able to take it in on a Saturday which always seems to be booked out at the place i want to take mine to (Pro-Tune in Auckland)..

My first thought was also to check exactly what ECU you have.

I don't see an issue with using a J3 Chip to raise the speed limiter to 190 to allow you to complete the dyno runs. It will be for a very short time and is not speed you are likely to reach on the streets.

Do you have a Garage thread on your XR6 Wagon? Would love to see more of it.

Cheers
BenJ

i think you may find you have other issues!! none of the falcons had speed limiters that low...
you may have a fueling issue or something else???..

5 speed manuals dont have speed limiters..
its only the std 4 speed auto that has the speed limiter, due to the extension housing failing/breaking from harmonic vibration with speeds over 180 causing the tailshaft to drop and break everything around it...

does it still have the original diff ratio?

like troyman said no falcons had speed limiters that low.
couldnt see it being fuel, dyno operator should of been on to it if it was starting to lean out heaps.

It has computer 4TFB. I think it decodes as: 4=EF, T=Tickford, F=long wheelbase, B=automatic (thanks sexyr6).

It has the original 3.45 diff ratio.

It showed 99.4MPH (160kmh) at the rollers when it cut out - and it was quite a 'hard' cut.

When we did a run in 2nd gear, it went all the way to the 5500rpm redline, no problems whatsoever. So, it's not fuel. Besides, it runs rich as across the board - 10.6 to 11.4. TI's J3 chip should fix that 8-)

Hey, KWIKXR. I had it dyno'd at West Auckland Engine Reconditioners. Like I say, I couldn't get a full run because the speed limiter cut it off at 4800rpm. But it was showing 196hp/146kw (corrected) at 4800 and still rising. If I assume the same curve above 4800rpm for 3rd gear as for 2nd, it would have hit 203hp/151kw. Torque peaked at 233 ft-lbs/316 Nm at 3700rpm, but was above 210 ft-lbs/285 Nm for the entire run (3000-4800rpm).
There is another dyno on the North Shore called Hi-Velocity - I haven't tried him, though. I will try to remember to PM you his details tomorrow.

Good idea on the garage thread, but I tend to work very slowly. Could be a boring thread. It has taken me 5 years to get this far. :D

I think I will go for 190-195km speed limiter with the J3 chip. Has anyone had a bad experience doing this?

Thanks guys.

Just get the speed limiter removed altogether.

data_mine and edfairmont4.0 have both snapped tailshafts on the dyno due to removal of speed limiter....

Thanks, 67RCE. Any idea what speed and diff ratio they let go at?

Cheers

I remember reading that thread about data_mine's letting go on the dyno, don't know what ratio he was running in the diff but for some reason i keep thinking he had the rev limiter set to a touch over 6000rpm..

Anyway, if you plan on removing the speed limiter or raising it, it might pay to have a tail shaft loop fitted just in case something decides to let go a high speed/rpm

Cool that would be great, thanks man. Will be interesting to see how it goes after the J3 chip, sounds like that RH24B cam is good for a bit of grunt then, Adrian at Franklin's mixed up a combo grind using the RH24B for my EF and it seems to go quite well.. Not sure if i should stick with it or go for something with a bit more of a 'punch'
