Hi all

I have two questions about my ED wagon....

First up, it doesn't start that well. The replacement engine is doing the same as the old one and it takes a couple of goes to get it started. My wife's EB on the other hand, with near 500,000K on it, starts first time, every time. By "a couple of goes" I mean it usually takes two cranking sessions to get it started.

Could this be an electrical issue like bad ground or something? I do need to take everything out of the interior and check earths and connections as the ED has had a swim at some stage, if you remember from my earlier threads...

Second, performance is dismal and much the same as the engine that was in the car (when it went). Again, my wife's EB is a whole lot more snappier than the ED. This can't purely be down to diff ratio could it? What are the ratio differences anyway? Any suggestions on where I should start looking would be appreciated. Or could it be related to the issue above?

Cheers
RD

Have you replaced fuel filter? Might be blocked, causing slow pressurizing of the fuel line.

Injectors might be blocked...unless you got reconditioned ones for the new engine.

Maybe not enough spark or as you said earthing issues. Check the earth to the block is nice and tight.

That's all I can think of.

Thanks phong

Fuel pump has been replaced, fuel filter replaced and injectors are off a car that also started first time. All earths in the engine bay are tight, coil and distributor also replaced. I'll go with bad earths everywhere else I think and get into stripping the interior and checking everything else....

Cheers

LOL! I know it seems like that but I was expecting to replace most of the mechanicals. The body is straight as, doors close beautifully and it is pretty clean all round. It is also the only one I have so it has to be brought up to a reliable transport and I am kinda having fun......most of the time. It will all come good in the end I am sure and should be worth it.....

Cheers

sounds like the compression could be a little low. 500k is a lot of any motor

maybe its time to spend $$$ and rebuild the lot?

No, this engine hasn't got 500K on it, it has 230 something. My wifes EB has the 500K and it starts great! Go figure.....

Have you tested how much spark you have while cranking the engine?

Reason i ask is i had a car for a while, that had a problem in the charging system, and whenever you went to start it, it'd hardly fire, yet it would roll start everytime. The starter was sucking way too much juice, and none was left for the spark system.

This could also be why it is sluggish. I indeed would be looking at engine bay earths, and that you don't have a large battery drain while cranking/running.

Andrew.

I really suspect bad earths/electrical connections between various plugs. Only the alternator hasn't been replaced but it generates the right voltage. The starter has been replaced as have all the spark generating bits as mentioned above. It is indeed weird but I will get to the bottom of it soon hopefully....

The ED is a bit heavier than the EB, and the wagon a bit heavier again, but don't figure you would really notice this.

Something to think about for sure. I hope to get BenJ to drive it tomorrow to see what he thinks, especially compared to the Black Beauty....

Hey Guys

I drove Racedirectors ED Wagon today.

Re the starting issue, IMO it is smartlock related. His car was caught in a flood at one time and we know the smartlock module got wet. The car turns over fine, takes a little long to fire, but when it does it runs sweetly. Doesnt appear to be over fueling etc, so to me smartlock seems to be taking its time to tell the ECU to start the car.

Re performance. The car goes quite good. I reminded RD that the wagon is a bit heavier than the sedan and will feel a bit sluggish compared to his wifes car. I did not feel that it was underperforming.

BenJ
