there's a weird sound that my car has been making recently, it started as a once a day thing, but not, its permanent. the sound is like a guitar string being strung the wrong way, but the sound continues as i aqccelerate, an stops immediately after i take my foot off the accelerator. i was told that it could be either the steering rack, or something to do with the power steering. Any Clues?? cheers

if it the rack it would happen when you turned the wheel

is this when teh car is sitting still
or is it when driving?

could be a shot bearing in one of the pully's

its when im driving, it was only whenever i turned the wheel, but also sometimes just when the wheels are straight. just annoys me that i bought the ba bcoz i was having way too many probs with my ef, but now im having probs with this. hopefully its not a potentially permanent problem

yeah I,d check the power steering pullies, as it would be constant after a while (time = wear) but would need load to magnify the vibration hence the sound when applying pressure to the system through turning the wheel.

Power steering pumps make a weird whirring sound when they are low on fluid and when the are worn. Too much tension on the pulley over time will wear the shaft bearings which make the pump vanes work at the wrong angle hence the noise. You could take the belt off and just run the motor to see if the noise disappears.

the water pump in my car did make that sound, but i havent heard it in awhile, probably bcoz i have gotten use to it. but i took it ford to get that whirring sound checked out and they said it was normal. i think they just said that bcoz its still under warranty. so i should be taking the car back to ford to get them to take a look at the water pump?or the pulley"s or both? I'm clueless about cars

Tell me why you cannot take the belt off even if it is only one. Engine will still run with out alt.pumps. a/c etc At least you would know if it is one of them and not a motor noise
