I think that is your ego getting in the way there mate. As it has been stated, stocko 302's are pretty tame...everything on them is a restriction - Upper / Lower intake manifolds, exhaust, crappy E7 heads - you really need to spend some money on them to make them move...the tickford 6's in the EF/EL range were quicker too. This is all N/A of course - bolt on a supercharger to a 302 and you're getting somewhere !

...just remember supercharging creates a constant force on the motor thus wearing it alot quickier, youll ware the bores in no time...especially off the lioghts youll get some nice takeoffs and power is just increasing as the RPM goes up...it would be such a good fealing the you would be always red lining it or hiting the revlimiter.

Sorry mate - gotta ask...do you have any idea about comprehension ? I can barely put 2 words of that together ! Wearing bores - how so ? "power increasing as revs go up ?" <-- are you kidding me...I thought engines made optimum power at 0 rpm

A 5.0 litre, cam, comp, ex, and diff should easyly see you in the 14's and still get a s**t better fuel economy than the blower...just rember, 14's IS NOT SLOW!!!

I think you need to do some more homework here. Firstly, force feeding an engine can increase its economy if tuned well / driven conservatively.

A tickford 6 with cam, headers, exhaust and 3.7 diff will see you into the 14s as well. I'm so tired of people with their v8 ideas... gimme an inline six any day of the week.

only problem with the 6 is, once you're in the 14's.. thats about it.
only a select few I6's have made 13's n/a, and all were manuals.
not to mention only a select few have made 14's n/a with an auto, 14's with an auto V8 is a lot easier.

stock for stock and with minor mods the 6 may have the edge by a tiny bit, but the 8 has so much more n/a potential.
or we could talk AU V8's then you'd have issues with your 6!

Been getting close for a few years now

Just s**t me when people hate on the 5l Martin.
I love both, but to claim the 4l is a better engine to modfy is borderline lunacy.

Agreed. If i had a $ for everytime i'd been told how the I6 spanks the V8... but i'm yet to see it happen??

Do I need it? My point is that for my purchase price plus abuot 5 grand <15000 total> in mods I will be quicker down the quarter and through the hills than a v8 <comparing with a same year model with the same total spent>.
Bang for buck you can go past the 6 if you're tight like me. The 8's are great, but money needs to be spent to get them there and they're more expensive initially as well. Not to mention the extra petrol consumption and the fact the 5L is a pain to work on compared to the 4L.

And whoever brought it up I was talking about manual. Auto is for pretend drivers :p.

Too much crap being talked here. A v8 is a better starting point any day.

I own a six and the v8 will normally be quicker ..

Your opinion doesn't count... :P

That's highly debatable.
5k would almost fund a MAF, TB, Heads and Manifold swap.
Spend a bit more, and you're knocking on the limit of an I6 N/A, with plenty more to go.

I agree with the previous comments by dcstraight and EFFalcon.
If you're staying N/A, you can't go past the 5l...

Depends what 6 and V8 you're talking about

I agree - a V8 is a better starting point...but it ultimately depends on your application...the I6 reaches its limit much earlier than the 302 Windsor for example.

If you're content with a worked I6 and a T5, then you can run some quick times and have a very driveable daily driver with a bit of poke - if you're not content, you can throw more money and supercharge / turbocharge to get a bit more too - probably to the point where an I6 would have *most* N/A 302's...and maybe 347's obviously depending on N/A mods for both V8 parties !

For making huge power - I would go a worked V8 and supercharge. I know people will argue that running an I6 with 20 psi + will be on par with a worked windsor etc...but reliability is more of an issue then IMHO.

I'm not a TQE bandit through and through...I would have a V8 - just one of the latter Windsors - simply because the earlier ones are slower out of the box compared to its TQE equivalent. The only stock V8 I'd have is AU2 +.

This isn't a V8 bagging thread (just remember it is in the 6cyl workshop forum) - I think in relation to the initial question at hand - a supercharged 6 is probably *more fun* than a mildly worked Windsor 302 (Trying to compare apples with apples as much as possible here!).

I completely agree with you Steve. Problem with a turbo and the I6 <including the BA> is that they hate being revved hard <ie my rev limiter coming in at under 6000> - so by nature you can't take full advantage of the hard revving idea of the turbo like you can with hard revving jap 4s and 6s.
Hence I'd love a supercharged 8... but with 15000 to spend and wanting an EL a 6 is an easy choice...
