I had an interesting experience on the weekend. At the intersection of burke road and dandenong road changing from 1st gear to 2nd gear, pulled the shifter back and the gear knob reached the back of the console lid!!!! I tried to shift again and the whole shifter came out in my hand!!! It so to get out of the intersection i slipped the clutch and limped into burke road. on the side i pulled apart the console to check it out.

turns out the shifter is just bolted on to the top of the box by four measily pop rivets!!! So all that shifting force is being put onto four screws. After jamming the gear into 1st with a screw driver i limped it home along princess doing 20kph in the left lane. so to get it fixed im putting on a rip shifter. at least the base plate on them is about 1cm thick!!!

Done the same in a Valiant mate. Limped home in 2nd. I guess some of the factory equipment are not designed for frisky treatment.

Andrew is talking talking about the point where shifter stick enters the back of the box.

Its a black metal plate, about 1mm thick held down 4 bolts. The shifter mechanism is held on by 4 crappy pop rivets to this metal plate. The metal seems so thin that over time and stress, the pop rivets just pull out of the plate...

Aparently the roadside service man that assisted Andrew in his plight told him that he has seen this 4 times already this year.

So it must be a common problem with age.

I really feel for Andrew here. It must have killed him driving home at 20km/h... Poor Bastard... :D

And what are you comparing the tightness too mate... As for being faster, I heard that was one of your faults. :D
