the fan belt seems to be rubbing on the tensioner arm. as it comes off the water pump pulley it goes around the bottom tensioner pulley, its rubbing on the arm of the tensioner, causing the edge of the belt to start to fray... after a few weeks the belt splits a little and it gets ripped to shreds.

i had to pull the water pump pulley out a little because the belt wasnt running on it properly, which i thought would fix it, but the belt is still rubbing on the tensioner :(

ive used a few washers on the tensioner bolts to try and space it out a little further, but its still rubbing.

anyone else have this problem and know any fixes??

cheers lads and lasses

from the sounds of it, i have a similar problem...though not quite as bad,

the problem for me (and possibly you) is a warped belt tensioner, apparently its a well known problem, it warps out of shape and appears normal..but while the car is driving it starts bit by bit to pull it off

hope this helps

your harmonic balancer hasn't slipped at all?

at my work we had an ef come in which had this same problem, and he was complaining about a knock noise.
the harmonic balancer was sliding back and forth, you could visually see it.

it is driven off the crankshaft.
it's the really big lower pulley.

There's only two reasons why you have your prob.

1. you need a new tensioner
2. Your harmonic balancer is about to fly out.

Its most likely that you need a new tensioner.
