My brother has an EL I6 and has just discovered a leak from the rear of the crank case. Now for that to be sorted I understand the engine has to come out. If it comes out can someone confirm for me that on the I6's, the other items that can sometimes let go at around the 120,000 to 140,000 km mark are the water pump and the head gasket? It'd be good to do some preventative maintenance at the same time if the engine comes out so I thought I'd ask for confirmation.

basically if it aint broke dont fix it
the water pump is easy to do in the car,
head gasket same, but i would not bother untill it does wave goodbye!

head gasket isnt too hard, and both jobs you mentioned can be done while engine is in the car, only things you may want to do are for instance sump gasket if its on its way, and rear main seal

why rip the motor out?? if its a rear main seal you can just drop the auto out. or if its a sump normally just a bit of a tighten of the bolts up will fix
the problem.
